I think you should weight later years with more albums per year because the quantity of music released is so much greater these days. You could take 10-15 per year from the 60s, 15-20 per year from the 70s and 80s, and 30 per year from the 90s on. That would be about 1000.

I really like this idea, but it would be a massive undertaking and right now I'm in my busy season. I'm thinking this might be a project I'd like to start at the beginning of summer. I've got some ideas how we could do it with out having everyone make a standard list and submitting them.

Quantity is way higher, but I don't think the number of essential albums per year is higher. I'd say it's much lower from my perspective, but it probably depends somewhat on when you grew up. But do you really think there are more essential albums released every year now than in 1967? Or 1969? Or 1972? Or 1977? Or 1980? Or even 1989?

Not a criticism - just curious :)

actually I do....in comparing 1989 (when several hundred records were released) directly to say, 2000, (when several thousand records were released) I would expect to find a lot more essential records in the latter year.

Just out of curiosity, did you get the remaster with bonus tracks? I've often wondered if those were worthwhile...

Anyway, good choice. The first half of that album is absolute perfection.

Can't go wrong with that choice, should be in every record collection.

If I'd have gotten here in time I may have made these suggestions...

'50s: Buddy Holly - Legend

'60s: Love - Forever Changes

'70s: Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady

'80s: Camper van Beethoven - Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweethearts

Reggae: Toots & the Maytals - Funky Kingston

Yeah, it has the bonus tracks. I'm really busy today so I'm not going to really get a chance to hear the album from beginning to end till tonight.

I picked up a used copy of this for $5 not too long ago.

It's great (especially at that price), but there are tons of albums from the '80s that I'd recommend above it.

I bought this months ago and haven't been able to get into just yet. I need to devote time to this album or maybe the hype has led to a let down.

Just go back and listen to the title track.
Listen to how all four instruments intertwine: one guitar on one beat, the bass on another, and the other guitar on yet a third. It's so spare, yet so fucking complex all at the same time. Listen to the interplay and I think you'll start to gain an appreciation for it.

I may have to dig out my "Big Bang" ROIR cassette tonight. Their cover of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is stellar.

I totally and wholeheartedly endorse this suggestion. Can't go wrong with this disc (followed very closely by Ziggy Stardust).
