We're talking actual band MEMBERS that are not hired hands (and not primary lead vocalists), but intergral parts of the band. But are NOT the primary songwriter.
People without whom the band would simply not sound the same.

Yes, there are many. Hence, the thread... sound off, people.

My picks:
Guitar: Joey Santiago (Pixies)
Drums: Jody Stephens (Big Star)
Bass: Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order)
Keyboards: Steve Nieve (The Attractions... is he just a "hired hand"?)
Keys (alternate): Bob Andrews (Brinsley Schwarz)

i vote for ac/dc's drummer, phil rudd. he keeps it real simple, which is integral to their sound. "back in black" wouldn't work at all with blazing-fast drum fills.

Bass: Robert Sledge (Ben Folds Five )

Sound completely changed for me when Folds went solo and Sledge was no longer on bass or singing harmonies. I went from really enjoying the music to realizing Ben Folds wasn't that great afterall.

Most people hail Mick Taylor as the greatest guitar player they ever had but Ron Wood has the fucking chops also.

The Stones would've ceased to be had he not been in that band in the mid to late 70's.

I was thinking of Faith No More but everyone in that band was pretty fucking good, though the LVP would probably be Jim Martin as evidenced by their later albums with other guitarists.

C'mon. Give Dream Theater a chance at it.

It sounds kind of odd to say so, but given that they are neither singers nor songwriters, Fleetwood Mac wouldn't be Fleetwood Mac without Fleetwood and Mac(Vie).
