Saw them last night for free. Great show. The Pretenders opened which is neither here nor there for me. The Who were epic and played for over two hours, and did a five song Tommy encore followed by an acoustic Two for Tea or something like that. Roger was awesome, Pete was in complete charge though.

They opened with Can't Explain, the Seeker, and Substitute before jumping into a new song Fragments that I didn't care for.

Ringo Starr's son was on drums and did really well, their new bassist was good too.

You could tell they were playing for a DVD, but that just made it all the more awesome of a perfomance.

They were on VH-1 Storytellers a few years back and it wasn't awful. I saw them when Get Close came out, expected the worst, and was pleasantly surpised by how good they were live. Granted, that was 20 years ago, but stil...

I saw them last week in San Jose.... and was impressed that they still seemed 1) like the who and 2) like they mattered... a couple of the new songs were so good I got the new album

I also saw Hynde, er the Pretenders on the Get Close tour, and maybe even since then... I can't believe that she would ever, ever be embarassing... too tough to break your heart.

I wonder how Townshend handles his tinnitus problem on stage nowadays--a few farewell tours ago they had to build him a little booth to retreat into if it got too loud.

That's odd, because usually they play for thousands and thousands of dollars.

I thought about catching them, but i can't afford the ridiculously high ticket prices on a student budget, instead i bought cheap beer and pretended.

I don't know what kind of sarcasm that is, but I will say that the Pretenders were just filling time and annoyed that anyone would want to hear the Chain Gang. I'm sure they could perform if they wanted to. The Who however were really giving their all. Like I said, when they were chillin for the encore everyone (and this is a packed sports stadium used for NHL and NBA) was screaming for Tommy and they came back and did a whole section of the album, along with probably their best new song.

Maybe I don't go to big concerts enough and major artists do this all the time but I didn't feel like they held back.

In any case it totally changes my perspective of the Who and what a rock concert should be like.

maximum R & B

Pete used to say that for those of us living after the death of God, large concerts like this were our church....

I was gonna say "the lame, pretending-I'm-really-stupid" kind, but I'll take funny.
