I happened upon this interesting fact while browsing AMG over the weekend. I wasn't really into electronic music ten years ago but I heard Endtroducing... was going to be a masterpiece. I bought it on the day of its release and the impact it has had on me is pretty damn profound. This cd reminds me of driving around my hometown in my 1988 Pontiac Firebird with Midnight in a Perfect World blaring. Definitely in my top 3 of all time and perhaps number one.

It's my number two, and I listen to a bit.

Was #25 in the collective Listmania poll we did back in the CMJ days.

Thank you. My god I thought I had entered into bizarro world. I was seriously thinking about searching for the Listmania thread so that I could find Timis' number one and tear it apart. It's probably something good though.

The "Do you listen to much music?" baffles me a bit.

And yes Revolver is unfuckwithable. If it came down to it, I would probably put something by the Beatles at number one.

Revolver isn't even my favorite Beatles album.

Yeah. I don't understand how it's become the default number one Beatles album. It's getting to be how I feel ashamed if I tell someone that I think the White Album or Sgt Pepper is better.

oh my god it makes me see red. Not our lovely red, but the stabby crash your car into people red.

and yes, I think everyone peobably should have a Beatles album in their top 5.

and probably a Beatles song that they can't fucking stand. Yellow submraine I don't mind as much, I think it's just I think of it more as a kids song than something that should appear on the same album as something like "Tomorrow Never Knows". But then I'm a Ween fan so I should probably just shut up now.

I remember hearing "Midnight...." on KCRW a lot before the album came out, Jason Bentley was a big fan. He had Josh on right around the time it came out & that pretty much sold me on the album. I knew Electronic music pretty well but was just getting into the whole Trip Hop/ Downtempo stuff via Ninja Tune & the stuff outta Bristol. Then there was that cover story in Urb that Brian Cross (B+) came out of retirement as a writer to do.

Sometime later a friend kept telling me this girl we went to highschool with was dating a Hip Hop DJ from No Cal, but he couldn't remember his name. Finally like the 4th time he brought it up I asked if it was Shadow & he goes, "Yeah Shadow that's it. Is he any good?" They're now married with twins.

I can't really say this album changed the way I looked at music since I spent the previous 10 years into Hip Hop & got into Electronic music in '92 but it was certainly perfect timing. I just saw Orbital, The Orb, Underworld, Chemical Brothers & Meat Beat Manifesto 5 months earlier & I didn't realise it at the time but beyond MBM every other act had already released thier best album. So Shadow, the rest of Mo' Wax label along with Ninja Tune really helped fill a void that I didn't realize was forming. Getting into that stuff also really fueled my interest in old Funk, Soul & Jazz to go along with my Dub fetish that The Orb had left me with.

The thing I love about Endtroducing... is how "Midnight...." or "Number Song" hit most people right off the bat. But there was so much beneath the surface of so many of the other songs & it make take you a long time to find some of it. I remember coming home from a nite out with the girl I was dating in 2001 & putting the album on with my headphones & freaking out at how good "What Does Your Soul Look Like, Pt. 4" sounded esp that vocoder or whatever that weird voice is going on there.

This is such a great, landmark album. To me it defines turntablism.

Apreesh.

<---- bought the deluxe version not too long ago.

i thought the deluxe edition was for the tenth anniversary.

I don't know if I'd call it turntablism, though the term "trip-hop" still makes me shudder. Turntablism always strikes me as people like the Skratch Piklz and Beat Junkies. Shadow just strikes me as so much more atmospheric than that.
