I totally dig how they footnote references written by characters in the book! I haven't even gotten to the Jonathan Strange part yet... I'm still on the Gentlemen Magicians gathering at York Cathedral!

The thing I find funny about the footnotes, is a few make reference to the life of Jonathan Strange, before he is even a character in the the book. I guess this book is a hit for a reason~!

Mr. Norrell reminds me of an old Elvis Costello... Kinda hip, but not really with it. )

I like to read, because, you know, there's nothing better than looking at little letters on acid-free paper.

Currently:

The Colussus of New York by Colson Whitehead. Published by Anchor Books.

Hotel Me: Poems for Gil Evans and Others by Ron Overton. Published by Hanging Loose.

I recently finished The Da Vinci Code. I'm not sure what I'll pick up next.

So what did you think? I'll refrain from voicing my opinion until I hear yours! ;)

Have either of you read Angels & Demons by Dan Brown? I liked the Da Vinci Code, so I'm wondering if A&D is a good read...

I've read Angels & Demons although I've never read DaVinci Code. I think you both would like A&D. Stay away from Deception Point however.

Have heard A&D is actually better than Da Vinci code, which I liked quite a bit.

A&D is great. I agree on Deception Point - that one is utter trash.

mine as well.

Me three.

I'm currently reading: Motherless Brooklyn- Jonathan Lethem.

I think Haq recommended it on another thread, I am fascinated by the main character in this novel... great book so far.

I haven't read "Survivor", but I am about to start "Diary" by Palahniuk.

Also up next on the list: Motherless Brooklyn - Jonathan Lethem
America: The Book - Jon Stewart, et al.
God's Politics - Jim Wallis

Right on, Dri... do you feel like you have Tourette's yet? His book "As She Climbed Across the Table" is great too, though it's really sciencey, which I can see turning some off.

I read The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists by Gideon Defore last week and it was hilarious! Now I'm re-reading The Great Gatsby.

Sorry for the delayed response. I missed this entire conversation.

I haven't read Angels & Demons. Liked the Da Vinci Code. Not being well versed regarding some of the religious aspects, I liked the simplistic writing tone used to explain what are, no doubt, detailed and complex rituals and documents. It was a quick and entertaining read, if not a little far fetched at times; but really, that's the way I felt it was suppose to be.

also, Fortress of Solitude is pretty good, too.

Sometimes. I have a Phillip Larkin collectoin that I am trying to get through, and an Anthology of American poets that I keep around for the hell of it or reference purposes.

That's great, Monsieur. I think this country would be far better off if its citizens read poems from time to time. :)

Okay, I like what you said. I waited ages to read this book because I thought "mass market book that appeals to majority of Americans = crap."
Similar to John Grisham books-- entertaining beach reading, but that's about it.

You're right, the book is written in a simplistic style about a very complex iidea. There are actually several books written about the Priory of Sion, most notably "Holy Blood, Holy Grail," which I believe Mr. Brown borrows heavily from.

Overall, I thought the story was good, but hated the writer's style. It could have been better.
