I don't care we're doing it again.

The best part of this time of year is hearing and hearing about your favourite lesser-known releases. Please list a few criminally underheard titles from '06. A brief description will be helpful. I'll start:

Image

Daedelus "Denies the Day's Demise" (Mush)

Considering the amount of electronic music that gets listened to here but not talked about, this is an easy touch point for me, despite that this is arguably his least electronic sounding record (that I know of). Following themes of nocturnal revery, this album is an exercise in layering and melody, blending foregrounded gamelan-like percussion with glistening synths and keyboards, and Daedelus' own innocent voice. It combines to a coherent whole that traipses styles without alienating the listener. I'd give you an RIYL if I knew one.

Broadcast - Future Crayon

Image

OK, so its a b-sides and rarities compilation not a proper album, but it still needs to be talked about. Its some of Broadcast's best work, mixing their usual electronic and real instruments. Alot of it showcases Broadcast at their most psychedelic pop sounding - 'Poem of a Dead Song' is basically 'Some Velvet Morning' for the 21st century

Peter Frampton's latest, Fingerprints, released in September.

This is surprising the hell out of me. A friend burned it for me, and I had no idea what to expect. Well, not really. What I expected was poppy, lovey-dovey songs, but it's instrumental. There's some really cool guitar work on there, with unobtrusive backing (see below) on some songs, and there's some killer guest musicians adding some flavor to others. It reminds me of a more mellow Blues Saraceno (sorry- too obscure?).

I listened to it, recognized the 3rd song as Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden (with nice, distorted guitar where the lead vocals would normally be), and had to search out more info. Here's what I found: In a career full of accolades, Frampton is particularly proud of Fingerprints: “This has been the CD I’ve been waiting to make all my life. Every track has been a wonderful challenge, pushing me to raise my own bar again and again.”

With a stellar cast of players, Frampton traverses a diversity of material on Fingerprints, from American soul to Latin balladry and all-out rock tunes. To help bring his childhood musical dream to life, Frampton invited Rolling Stones Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman to play on “Cornerstones”; original Shadows members Hank Marvin and Brian Bennett to perform with him on “My Cup of Tea”; and Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready and Matt Cameron join him for a cover of Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” and the original “Blowin’ Smoke.”

Fingerprints also reveals Frampton’s penchant for American roots music, especially on “Blooze,” featuring Warren Haynes on slide guitar, and “Double Nickels” featuring Nashville virtuoso Paul Franklin on pedal steel. Frampton trades licks with British saxophone legend Courtney Pine on the blues rocker “Boot It Up.” He and guitarist/co-producer Gordon Kennedy play harmonizing electric guitars on “Float,” another album highlight. Another guitar virtuoso, John Jorgenson, joins Frampton on the Django Reinhardt-style “Souvenirs De Nos Pères.”

Fingerprints follows Frampton’s critically acclaimed 2003 release, Now, which prompted The Washington Post to proclaim, “Frampton comes alive again.” In another review, the BBC described Frampton’s playing as “faultless throughout.” The Associated Press said, “When it comes to fiery, guitar-drenched rock, Frampton delivers.”

The consistency of Frampton’s playing was also affirmed when he earned a “Best Rock Instrumental Performance” Grammy nomination for Live in Detroit (2000). In 2001, Universal released the 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of the 1976 landmark Frampton Comes Alive, to much acclaim. The album remains one of the most successful live albums of all time and continues to influence generations of young artists.

Quite enjoyable! And quite a pleasant surprise.

i didnt much like those daedelus or chris clark albums. and i like both artists back catalogues. i'll post up a couple here:

Image
amel larrieux - morning
reached #74 stateside billboard chart, but amel is still incredibly underrated. she is an outstanding crossover artist, touching the adult contemporary crowd but moreso the hip, neosoul crowd. she has put out a couple great albums now and am just waiting for her to finally blow and become one of the biggest names in r&b.
fans of: anthony hamilton, alicia keys, jill scott, etc etc

Image
arborea - wayfaring summer
i guess you would file this under the whole weird folk genre, but its not very weird. this is an album by a married couple from maine. the album is short, which makes it a very enjoyable listen and sounds similar to nick drake's first album. the girl has a gorgeous voice, and the guy needs to sing more. for those of you digging that beach house record or are looking for more mellow folksy stuff, this might be one to check out.
fans of: fairport convention, nick drake, weird folk

Image
bitcrush - in distance
it's mike cadoo of gridlock and dryft "fame". in this album, which is a little daunting to listen to due to its length, but it is a very beautiful and epic album. i guess you would file it under post rock, but its also very electronic in feel and also a lot of shoegaze elements. i try to get rid of this album, but then everytime i relisten to it, its just great.
fans of: ulrich schnauss, explosions in the sky

Image
bugz in the attic - back in the doghouse
people have just sort of forgotten about these guys, since this album was so overdue. for the last about 3 years, bugz in the attic have been doing great remixes overseas, and becoming sort of the posterboys of the whole broken beat/giles peterson dance scene over in the uk. in 2004 they had the incredibly single "booty la la" and now finally in 2006 they released their debut album of original material....super fun. super danceable. not entirely stupid. they don't really utilize the broken beat sound in the album, but it is more funky. lots of international vocalists keep it excellent sounding as well.
fans of: basement jaxx, giles peterson's show, dj /rupture

Image
candi staton - his hands
2004 had the release of the candi staton retrospective disc that was incredible, and i know billy g and i talked about it a couple times at least. 2006 had a new album from her, her first non-religious album in decades. 7 of the 11 songs are covers, but its really good i think, despite some mediocre reviews. will oldham penned a track or two and i think produced it as well.
fans of: sharon jones and the dap kings, betty lavette, dirty country soul

Image
chris smither - leave the light on
to be completely honest, this is in the running for album of the year for me. i don't know a whole lot about chris smither, he's been around forever making his own versions of folk and blues hybrid music, i have a couple albums plus this one. i know he has a dedicated following, and i know some of you here probably like him. this album isn't getting a lot of press, but it's fantastic. some of the best written songs of the year i would say. and his voice is great as always. some nice singer/songwriter music that blends a few different styles together. smither knows his place in the music world and its just a good one.
fans of: bob dylan, guy clark, whoever

Image
citay - citay
hyped a lot on hipinion early in the year. i dismissed this record entirely until a couple months ago, in the late summer...around when i started school. its a perfect soundtrack for coming into autumn, being on your own. just hanging out. lots of different sounds in this album. its mostly instrumental and acoustic, but its not necessarily mellow. its pretty great though.
fans of: black sabbath vol. 4, the medieval folk moments of zeppelin albums, comets on fire, ben chasney bands.

i'll do more soon.

da backwudz - wood work
i still don't understand how these guys didn't become one of the biggest duos in mainstream rap. their 2005 single "you're going to love me" which came out in like may of that year was all over mtv2 and is just outstanding. their album got delayed almost an entire year, killing their hype, but evenso, their second single, "i dont like the look of it" which sampled willy wonka and had an insane video also all over mtv2 was also outstanding. they are the new breed in commercial yet conscious southern rap. and i will keep talking about this album as one of the best hip hop releases of the year.
fans of: nappy roots, outkast, goodie mob, jazze pha stuff.

Image
dark meat vomit lasers family band - universal indians
usually just referred to a "dark meat" this is some huge hippie collective of musicians (both kids and older people) that make loud music. we're talking polyphonic spree without the shit, but with the loud rock and roll. the albums slams and is a blast.
fans of: rock and roll. ccr meets the stooges meets crazy horse meets some hippie folk collective.

the durutti column - keep breathing
its a durutti column albums...so no one REALLY cares...but it just so happens to be a fantastic album too. typically vini reilly guitar playing. very ethereal, lots of samples. its always hard to describe durutti column...but if you have ever liked any of his other work in the past 30 years...check this out for sure.
fans of: uh. no one is like durutti column. futuristic music? mellow guitar playing that sounds like a space station?

Image
esg - keep on moving
esg is still making music. the original hip white girl hip hop/electro pioneers released an album this year with a lineup that included some of their daughters on the tracks. the album is just fun. very mellow and beat heavy, with the typical awkward esg lyrics and yelps. its great for driving and sunny days.
fans of: no new york, old school hip hop, dubstep, etc.

flying canyon - flying canyon
i think they received a favorable review on pitchfork, but i dont think they have really gotten any hype due to it. the album is gorgeous. it sounds like the album cover looks. its mournful, california folk-rock. great great album.
fans of: csny, skip spence, other psych folk bands

Image
glue - catch as catch can
i know that at least shiv liked their last album, but i think this one is better. its underground hip hop, one genre that was seriously lacking good releases this year (that i could find, at least). adeem is a great lyricist and maker is one of the absolute best underground producers iin the game. album has a bit more a b-boy feel to it than previous efforts, which were more sad or morbid.
fans of: illogic, rhymesayers, heiroglyphics, blueprint, etc.

Image
i am a robot and proud - the electricity in your house wants to sing
dude has been making some of the best poppy idm electronic in the last few years. (think postal service without the vocals, and a bit more complex). this album, like its cover is full of warm, fuzzy electronic music. just a feel good album that is nothing too original, but has my heart more than other similar ones released this year.
fans of: nathan fake, dntel, royskopp a bit.

The two people in this band, when they sing together, remind me of Juliana Hatfield & John Strohm. The Like Young have a little bit more of an edge, though, than the Blake Babies.

I don't like it as much as their last one but I do find it to be more solid than a lot of Juliana's solo work recently. I just wish they would've combined the Some Girls and Lemonheads records together to make one amazing disc.

irene - apple bay
i don't know know if this has much of an audience here or not. i actually coined the term "american apparel rock" for this album. based on the cover you might see why. basically what this album sounds like is stephen merritt fronting the pipettes or other really silly and fun indie-pop bands. the album is like 25 minutes but its super fun to put on with friends or just going for a short drive.
fans of: architecture in helsinki, pipettes, belle and sebastian, magnetic fields, hipster and swedish pop.

Image
james blackshaw - o true believers
james blackshaw is more or less the new wave of awesome 12-string players, soon to take the throne from jack rose, who took the throne that was basically forever held by john fahey. its not ONLY his guitar though. most of the tracks feature some other unique instruments with minimal effect that just create an atmosphere of brilliance. its that kind of music. and yes its great.
fans of: robbie basho, jack rose, john fahey.

Image
kazumasa hashimoto - gllia
noble records, based out of japan is quickly becoming one of my favorite labels. their releases come with the subtitle of "music for daily life" and they focus on the classical/electronic hybrid style of music, but the albums they release (at least from what i've heard) have been very tasteful, and exceptional. this is the newest release by famed japanese composer hashimoto and is just beautiful. very serene and soft. featuring a wide variety of instruments with keys as the main focus point, the album is just perfect for those nights. you know the ones i'm talking about. beautiful.
fans of: max richter, clogs, susumu yokota, minimal music.

Just ordered it. Thanks for recommendation!

I'm a sucker for anything that sounds even remotely like Basement Jaxx.
