I read this today in Chicago's Newspaper for Dummies, Red Eye.

Quote:
School's out forever Will Smith doesn't think much of school—and he's not sending his kids.

"The things that have been most valuable I did not learn in school," he tells Reader's Digest in its December issue.

"Jada and I home-school our children because the date of the Boston Tea Party does not matter," he said. Smith said he can learn anything just from reading books.

"I absolutely know that I could learn how to fly the space shuttle because someone else knows how to fly it, and they put it in a book," he said. "Give me the book, and I do not need somebody to stand up in front of the class."

Guess he's read the book "Instant Confidence."

Wow. On one hand, I applaud him for taking the education of his children into his own hands and praising books. On the other (and correct) hand, I think he's a moron for saying that the date of the Boston Tea Party doesn't matter. Sure, it's not knowledge used daily (I don't remember the date anyway), but it's kind of nice to be a well-rounded individual. And what about your children having the opportunity to experience school and its social environment? Will & Jada have been spending too much damn time with Tom & Katie.

Simple solution to this. Give him a book on flying a space shuttle and then have him man one. He's right if he gets into space. We're right if it goes challenger disaster.

No fun. Nothing like a ringing endorsement for public education like seeing a lovable celebrity burn to his death because of his own stupid comments.

Oh, and somebody tell his children to say hello to the food stamp office for me.

This is the same kind of logic I've seen put to use by unmarried black women: I don't need a man to raise my kids!

Yes you do Shaquila. Yes, you do.

Home schooling is code for "we hired them really expensive personal instructors cause we rich like that."

The sadder part of this whole fiasco is that Will Smith was a scholar as well as a rapper - before he found fame he actually attended university to study engineering - the practical, math and science-heavily involved kind, not the Dr. Dre studio wizardry kind.

It is kind of hard keeping the public education dream alive when so many members of society do not place any kind of value on the education they rejected to recieve while they trolled the hallways of our public institutions.

That said, they (the youth of America) do seem to be getting dumber on purpose. If I had the loot, I'd privately school my brats too - but I'd stay away from home-schooling, those folks scare the bujebus out of me.

I seriously don't think his kids are going to be anywhere near a food stamp line. Will Smith makes like $20 mil per movie.

I realize he was speaking out his ass, but running with it, I'd like to see him read some of that stuff without a decent education. I've tried reading a lot of that stuff and I've been following the shuttle program for well over 20 years. It's seriously dense stuff. And I don't think we want the kind of people that don't think they need to know certain historical events teaching other people, let alone flying any gigantic armed bombs like the shuttle system. Second, and completely irrelevant, NASA doesn't allow presumptuous assholes like Will Smith into the program anyway - astronauts are pretty damned humble people. And incredibly intelligent. Two things he is not. He's just another of those idiots that thinks that just because he can't apply something directly to his daily life it doesn't mean anything to him. What he wants to breed are more of the morons who wind up on Jay Leno's Jaywalking segments sheepishly answering "France?" when they're asked "Who did we fight in the Civil War?"
