Not sure what's dangerous about these albums other than the fear of the unknown.

ooh you got me there. how many of those albums have you heard?

ZERO, which was kind of my point with that whole unknown business. The only one I've heard of is Girl Talk, which I've pretty sure I don't need to hear. If that's not-safe music, buy me floaties.

there's plenty of bands i like that are "known" bands that have put out good albums this year. yeah yeah yeahs, tv on the radio, the paper chase, the rapture, slayer, the black keys. i dunno, i guess i just don't think the strokes are going anywhere with their sound or have the songs/hooks to keep me interested. i like the first album, i don't need to hear it again for the 3rd time.

Hear hear.

Ability to cut up someone else's hard work isn't the same as creating it yourself. Sorry. It's talent. It's a skill. It's just not the same as actually picking up a trumpet or a guitar and making music. No, I can't do it, as far as I know, especially since I can't afford the gear. I can't do my own plumbing either, but that doesn't make my plumber Ryan Adams.

oh, you're one of "those" people.

Fair enough. I liked the YYY's and Black Keys. The other stuff just isn't my bag.

THEM? Yep. I've been outed. I enjoy all sorts of music. I just make a funny face when someone calls certain kinds of artists "musicians." Marcel Duchamp entered a porcelain urinal in the paris expo back at the turn of the last century to make people ask themselves what "art" really was. Technically correct, but it cheapens the definition of art to a point that the title now becomes worthless.

so kid koala is more proficient with a turntable than the strokes are with their instruments. doesn't make him any less a musician. i mean, how do we define what an instrument is?

Amateurs borrow, pros steal.

And the Strokes, as Radcliffe has said before, sound nothing like any of the bands people say they sound like.

also, this album sounds nothing like room on fire, and room on fire sounds nothing like is this it.

Awesome album. In my top 3 if not #1. The review BeeOK posted sums it up for me pretty well.

When the Strokes EP came out "Last Night" and "Hard to Explain" grabbed me by the short ones. But when the first album came out I just never bought into it. Then came the whole hipster backlash, at least where I was, about how they were just a gimmick band and their producers wrote all of their songs, etc. The distorted vocals thing on every fucking song didn't really help their case.

Room on Fire was just meh to me and the too cool for school crowd had tainted them for me by that point. Besides the killer 1st track I never got into that one either.

But First Impressions is a fucking classic. A true fucking rocker for those of us without mullets. Songs 1-5 make the album, then Killing Lies and Fear of Sleep pour over the top like gravy.

I can't believe you used the Black Keys as an example here. I like them and all but they:

1. Repeat the same shit a lot.
2. Are kinda boring (on the real)
3. Are VERY derivative of other peoples music
4. etc.

not a big deal to me though. you don't like the strokes. ok. let's move on.

yeah they were probably a bad example seeing as i don't think the new album is all that great, but i think the discussion was more about known vs unknown bands. but yeah, moving on.

Whoa now. I'm not sure that's correct in the slightest. Take it from someone who actually plays an instrument or two. They are very good musicians, especially this last album... don't let the bored look and fashionable clothes fool you (easy mistake to make). I could not do a good deal of the guitar bits on the last one, at least not as cleanly, and I'm honestly not a bad player.

That's a personal decision, but I choose not to include something that plays music for you. Yes, you're extremely crafty at what you do with it, and that gets into the whole "bucket boy" drummer argument, but again, it's a personal line to draw. I draw mine shy of turntables, samplers, and just hitting the "samba #1" button on keyboards.

Yeah, thats spot on for me.

What songs do you guys rate the most from this album?

That squirrgle fellow reeks of garbage.

Edit- I remember an old thread that asked who your fav singer was . Julian whatshisname was mentioned and that he had such a great vocal range. I just find that a wee bit bizarre as i always felt that he was a bit monotone. Okay, he can go deep and he can do loud but at a certain level. Always felt that i wanted a bit more from him and he just never delivers. Is that just me talking bollocks? I guess thats a silly question with lots of strokes fans. I think he holds them back a bit.

Damn Kyle, you make that argument so well I almost want to buy it.

But cuttin up them turntables makes music, just like playing them gutiars makes music. Some what both of of them create is more unique and engaging, and harder to do than others. Just like a well-made toilet is art, though it may not match up well against the mona lisa.

Guitars are instruments. Turntables are instruments. Yes, buckets can be instruments. People should stand or fall on the merits of what they do with them. If you're just hitting the Samba #1 button, then fuck you, get your toilet out of my art competition.

Well, Julian's vocals are mixed way different than all the others for one.

What else is there to buy into other than these aretalented kids who grew up with good taste in music and wanted a band that reflected their influences that were different than the sound right before they broke? Saviors? Probably not but I'm not sure they were ever trying to be.

Oh yeah, I forgot. They were privledged. sigh.

And Kid Koala is an amazing musician and the turntable is his instrument.

And Old K I'll take your word for it. I certainly enjoy a lot of the products of that art form, I just tend to side with my own background and say "it's easier." That's probably unfair AND incorrect. I'm not a tyrant.
