DVDs
Little Feat - LF in Jamaica (for my dad)
a DVD with five indie horror movies on it. It was $9.99 before the 30% discount, so why not, right? I'll tell you why not, it sucks. Not scary.

CDs
new Pretty Girls Make Graves
new Camera Obscura

Total haul, around $49.

Books are still way too f'ing overpriced.

I went yesterday and they CDs were still only 30% off.

I found Mark Kozalek's "What's next to the Moon" because I've been wanting to pick it up but since 30% off $18.99 still isn't that great of a deal I didn't do much searching around.

When I checked out the CD rang up for only $9.91 after tax. I'm still confused about why it was so cheap. If other CDs were going for that price I would have bought a couple more.

Picked up several things over the past few weeks. Last week for 30% off I got:

Caetana Veloso - Transa
Phil Manzanera - Diamond Head
Flamin' Groovies - Teenage Head (reg. $9.99)
Charles Mingus - Mingus Dynasty (reg. $9.99)
Beach House - s/t

Got my eye on some more expensive stuff when it finally gets down to 40-50% off, hopefully this week or next.

I was kinda surprised at how quickly all of their Os Mutantes CDs got snatched up (I was planning on getting one or two). A lot of the Brazilian stuff seemed to be disappearing which is why I went ahead and grabbed Transa.

40-60% off

clinic - walking with thee
robert johnson - up jumped the devil (sadly originally priced at $9.99 for a two disc set)
t-bone walker - jukebox hits 1943-1952
the jam - beat surrender (import)

cherry (dvd)

$39 and change.

at 40% off this past week:

The Fall - The Frenz Experiment (pretty meh Fall record, as it turns out)
Metallica - Master of Puppets (Why? Why did I think I wanted this?)
Richard Hell & The Voidoids - Blank Generation (About fucking time I got this)
Toots & The Maytals - Funky Kingston/In the Dark (I'm actually liking this a lot. Shit, this opens up a whole new genre for me to start blowing money on.)
The Byrds - Younger Than Yesterday (On first listen, I'm liking this much more than I expected to. I had a sort of hunch that this would be better than the other two Byrds albums I have.)
Sun Ra - Sound of Joy (Pretty tame - but good - early Sun Ra record.)

It's my favorite Byrds album. First version that I heard of "Everybody's Been Burned" was by SeBADoh, their version is far superior.

Keep forgetting about this whole Tower thing, that's OK because I did go to Amoeba yesterday…

I went back today and discovered that a few of my top "wants" were now gone (Go-Betweens "16 Lovers Lane" 2-disc reissue and Mark Hollis s/t, plus others), but I did manage to get...

Paul Weller - "Fly on the Wall" 3-disc B-sides compilation
Don Caballero - "World Class Listening Problem"
Talk Talk - "Spirit of Eden" remastered import version
Les Savy Fav - 3/5
Ride - "Waves"

...for $53.57. The shelves were still full of (IMO) some great albums, although the selection is rapidly getting worse as the holidays approach and prices drop. Also, I was surprised by the number of copies available for certain albums, such as 15+ copies of each of the last few Robert Pollard/Fading Captain albums, or 30+ copies of the first Constantines album.

the singles collection actually grew substantially between tuesday and saturday this week. i guess they're pulling things from the back.

i picked up a handful of good albums and EPs for just under $50 yesterday. the DVDs have been picked over, though. i'll still go back next weekend, i think. hopefully, the black friday rush doesn't kill it.

I may make one final visit in a few weeks. There were a few things that I was on the fence about, but they're no-brainers if I can get them for 70%+ off. If they're gone by that point, well, at least I tried.

So I just went and must have had the luck to get a disgruntled employee as my cashier because I got the following for $21.87. He asked if I wanted it all for 20 bucks, and I said of course, though I figured he was joking.

Shirley Collins and Davy Grahmn--Fold Roots, New Routes
Wire--154
Goldfrapp--Supernature
Go-Betweens--16 Lovers Lane 2 disc
The Orchids--Unholy Soul
The Orchids--Lyceum
Chris Stamey w/Yo La Tengo--V.O.T.E.
Teardrop Explodes--Kilimanjaro
Shirley Collins--Within Sound (4cd BOX SET!)

Before tax, my total should have been $113. So I saved over 90 fucking dollars. I don't have a clue why he did this--my friend was after me and didn't get it.

So, $20 and your phone number? Seriously, I love stories like this... what the hell does the cashier care? Obviously he doesn't.

I hit my Tower to bolster my jazz collection... almost every jazz CD is $7.49.

I'm not sure if it applies to all Tower locations or just the Chicago ones (I imagine it's all), but there is a "Buy 4 Get 1 Free" deal for CDs tomorrow and Friday. Some of the locations are closed tomorrow for obvious reasons, but not all.

Today's haul:

CDs:
Big Star - #1 Record/Radio City
Kimya Dawson - Hidden Vagenda

Singles/EPs:
Graham Coxon - "You and I"
Shout Out Louds - "The Comeback"
Lily Allen - "Smile"
Sophie Ellis Bextor - "Get Over You"/"Move This Mountain"
Low Skies - I Have Been to Beautiful Places

Spindle of 25 blank discs
40 pack of slimline jewel cases

Paid around $50. CDs/accessories still 40% off, singles are 70% off.

Oh, and at the Tower on Wabash, there's a great deal of porn left. I'm just sayin'...

We got lucky. There's a Rasputins moving into our old Tower location.

It may be a while. They have MiniDiscs marked at $12.99 for one 60 minute disc.

40% off all CDs, plus it was "Buy 4, Get 1 Free."

So I went mildly berzerk and flipped through the entire jazz/classical/world room (half empty at this point) before I repaired to the main room and indulged myself in the A's and B's.

In the end, this averaged out to $8.30 per disc:

Arab Strap - The Last Romance
A Band Of Bees - Sunshine Hit Me
Band Of Horses - Everything All The Time
Devendra Banhart - Cripple Crow
Beulah - Yoko
Blondie - Parallel Lines
Boris - Pink
The Vince Guaraldi Trio - Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus
Daniel Lentz - Los Tigres De Marte (post-minimalism)
The London Cello Sound - Baby Cello: Soothing Music From 24 Cellos (kinda cheesy, but c'mon, it's 24 fucking cellos)
McLusky - The Difference Between Me And You Is That I'm Not On Fire
Terrace Of Memories - Terrace Of Memories (Projekt Records ambient stuff from Sam Rosenthal and Vidna Obmana)
Various Artists - Melancolie (2 CDs of sad classical)
Various Artists - Congotronics 2: Buzz 'N' Rumble From The Urb 'N' Jungle
Yoshida Brothers - III ("Japan's maverick shamisen superstars return!" trumpets the sticker on the cover. Inexplicably, they cover Lennon's "Oh My Love" and Eno's "By This River"; I was powerless to resist buying it. Angular banjos sound good to me.)

Yeah, I'm sure.

No offense if this was meant to be a joke of some kind, but the ad said "Buy 4 Get 1 Free" which seems reasonable at this time.

Hey Red - how is the CD selection at Wabash? Decent or piss-poor? I don't think I've been to that one in quite some time.

Stockton, about an hour from the BA.

From the local rag:

By Ian Hill
Record Staff Writer
November 21, 2006 6:00 AM

STOCKTON - Rasputin Music, the eclectic Bay Area record chain, has purchased the lease on the Tower Records store at Pacific Avenue and Benjamin Holt Drive.

The possibility that the well-known music operator will open a store there after Tower closes its doors for good by year's end has some residents rejoicing while others sing the blues.

"I grew up in San Francisco, (and) we would always go to Rasputin," said Brian Clark, a 31-year-old Stockton musician. "For me, the more variety of music, the better."

Rasputin has large stores in Berkeley and San Francisco that sell new, used and hard-to-find CDs and LPs. It also has locations in Campbell, Newark, Pleasant Hill, San Lorenzo and Vallejo. Rasputin Vice President Jonathan Fernandez did not return a telephone call seeking comment.

Mat Woods, 25, guitarist for the Stockton rock band Morse, said he would shop at a Stockton Rasputin outlet.

"I'll probably be there a lot," Woods said. "In fact, I'm kind of concerned. I think my paycheck might start disappearing faster."

Other residents, however, worried about how Rasputin's decision to come to Stockton would affect the city's few remaining independent record stores. Longtime Stockton music promoter Middagh Goodwin, 39, and Lodi resident Doug Campbell, 22, shopping at Replay Records, expressed concern about the future of the store, a Stockton music institution for nearly two decades.

"My friends and I come here a lot," Campbell said. He said if Replay closed, Stockton would lose a record store with a hometown feel that shoppers can't find at bigger stores.

"I bought my first CDs here, my first vinyl here," said Replay employee Alex Picasso, 21. "It's been like a second home to me."

Replay owner Willie Hines, 51, expected Rasputin to be the "death blow" for his store, which is in the Hammer Ranch Shopping Center on Pacific Avenue and also sells used CDs and LPs.

"I've been doing this for a good 20 years. That's a good run," Hines said. "I'll do my best until the end, if there is one. I'll fight the good fight."

A federal bankruptcy judge last month approved the $134.3million sale of West Sacramento-based Tower Records to liquidator Great American Group. Two weeks ago, the liquidator auctioned the chain off to several buyers, including Rasputin, according to published reports. A judge still must approve the auction results.

Tower opened its Stockton outlet in 1974, and the store quickly became a staple of the music market. When its closure was announced, customers said they would miss the store's wide selection, which ranges from the cutting-edge punk group The Refused to Bay Area rap pioneer Mac Dre to classical composer Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Tower also sells videos, magazines and CDs by San Joaquin County musicians, and it has served as a Ticketmaster outlet and hosted performances by several artists.

Rasputin's decision to lease the Stockton Tower Records comes as record stores are facing increased challenges from the Internet and big retailers such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy. A study by the Recording Industry Association of America showed the percentage of consumers who bought their music at record stores dropped from 52 percent in 1995 to 32.5 percent in 2004.

Over the same period, the percentage of consumers who bought music at stores such as Best Buy and Wal-Mart grew from 28.2 percent to 53.8 percent.

The percentage of Internet music consumers grew from 0.3 percent in 1997 to 5.9 percent in 2004.

Pretty good, actually. I found more obscure music at Wabash. Well, as obscure as Tower can get, I suppose... Check it out. The movie selection is also great.

I actually ended up going to the Wabash location when it opened this morning, and picked up the following for $44...

Elvis Costello/Allen Toussaint - The River in Reverse
Wilderness - Vessel States
Radio Birdman - Zeno Beach
Starflyer 59 - Silver (expanded reissue)
Starflyer 59 - Gold (expanded reissue)

It's a little depressing to think that my CDs were still almost $9 each with the 40% off and "Buy 4 Get 1 Free" deal, but I'm happy with my selections.

Spent a few bucks at a Tower in LA today. It was REALLY picked over. Walked out with:

Thom Yorke - Eraser
Medeski, Martin, & Wood - Greatest Hits thing from Blue Note years (98-05)
The Hives - Vini, Vidi, Vicious
Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin in 5.1 surround
And a bunch of jazz stuff for my dad

not bad; all 40% off. Kind of sad they are closing down. I don't have one near me at home but damn they are like a Toys R Us for music lovaz.
