and the Cowboys remain the only team in the NFC I'm actually scared of at this point.

Take a look at the Bucs? Yep, they locked up their D, won without an offense, then tried to build the offense for longevity. Then the defense up and got old on them, and they are also-rans.

Also, 2 years ago, Delhomme was the QB of the future. In 2 years, he will be selling insurance, or be the local channel 9 commentator on the "Bank of America Post Game Panthers Report."

The Broncos -- yep, you can throw anyone back there and win, except for the guy they got.

The Steelers were built for the long term, but that term has ended.

If they don't win this year (and I will acceed that they have a much bigger chance than I ever would have given them) you are gonna be kicking yourself for the next few years when Rex G is playing golf in Orlando, and selling Chardonnay for National Wine Company.

Like I said, it's 4 year plan. Like all the teams you mentioned. It would be one thing if we had an aging star running back (like we did in the 80s) or several key FAs coming up, but we don't. We are in season two of that plan, and we are going to have the best record in the NFC by a country mile this season.

I don't know how anyone cannot term what the Bears have done organizationally the last two seasons as anything but successful. I think the next season and the one after that they will also be in a position to compete for a super bowl. I have not seen enough from Grossman to believe he is ready to compete for a super bowl this season.

Point taken, Spade. I will admit I went a bit bucky, because maybe I didn't quite get what you meant. I will say that if I were the coaching staff, I wouldn't be pushing for a "4 year plan" in the locker room, I would be saying "This is our year, we haven't come this far to lose, Super Bowl or bust!"

But I can see how, as a fan, you are saying, "If they don't win it this year, its NOT the end of teh world, we are set up to compete for a few years."

I will also say, Watch Out for Them Cowboys!!
(The Boys looked pretty fucking good yesterday, and, in my eyes, for the first time in the Parcells Era, we look to be actually on track.)

They hold a special place in my heart for beating the Colts right now, but superstar T.O. has been less than impressive lately, IMO.

Either way, he was on the verge of "Pull him from the line-up and cut him" status in the first half. Looked OK, and actually HELD ON TO THE DAMN BALL! later in the game.

Beating the Colts is not very impressive at all. They should've lost 2 games prior to the Cowboys game.

The Dolphins are going to finish 9-7. I don't see what's so bad about losing to them.

Really?? 4-1 against New England, Jacksonville, Jets, Colts and Buffalo? I dont think so. Lucky to get two wins there. Just because they had a good second half last year doesnt mean they'll do it again.

Colts is last day of the season with home field likely locked up...

They definitely beat Boofalo and the Jets, who are wildly overrated, especially offensively.

3-2 at worst, which still puts them at 8-8. A far cry from "an embarrassing loss"

Three dead-arm starters down, one to go. "Brian Greise to the line of scrimmage, Brian Greise to scrimmage."

Teams like the Eagles (when McNabb is not hurt), the Bucs of 2000-2003, the Panthers of the last few seasons, the Broncos, the Colts and especially the Patriots have had consistently winning teams for several seasons in a row. I'm not talking about doing this for 7-8-9 years, I'm talking about having a 3-4 year plan. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. The Broncos, for example, follow the exact model I envision for the Bears - lock up a great o-line and it doesn't matter who you throw back there.

The problem with the 3-4 year plan is that, in the NFL, all it takes is an injury or a couple bad breaks to end your season. You really do have to make the most of every opportunity you get. I think the Steelers have a good formula. They don't put forth a ton of effort to have some amazing lineup that will give them a 2-3 year window as one of the elite teams, but they draft well, stay consistent, put out a good team every single year and wait for opportunities. Last year, it paid off for them.

To a certain extent the Patriots and Broncos do the same thing, but people see them differently becuase the Pats have won 3 Super Bowls and the Broncos haven't won any since Elway. But really the Patriots never dominated in the way that the old dynasty Cowboys, Niners, Packers did. They were a tough break here or a tuck rule there away from getting knocked out of the playoffs every year. They capitalized on more of their opportunities than the other teams I mentioned, but I think the Pats long term plan is similar to those other teams.

You'll have to clarify this a bit more for me. The Pats won 21 straight games for god's sake. I guess I kind of see that as domination. Not to mention 14 straight wins in '03.

Yeah, real fans buy rose colored glasses and see nothing but 16-0 seasons, super bowl dynasties, unicorns and rainbows.

Anyone who thinks the Patriots don't have a clear edge in this game at Foxboro is delusional. Yes, it's possible that the Bears will win, but extremely unlikely.

The Patriots will not lose 3 in a row at home.

Where did you get the idea that anyone expected a 16-0 season from the Bears? You are an embarrassment to the city of Chicago.

I wish I was there right now to beat your sorry ass.

Seriously, South Pacific...you need to relax and just root for the Bears in your own way. Going at it with the attitude that anyone who doesn't think the Bears are going to blow the opponent out every sunday isn't a "real fan" - that notion went out in the eighth grade or so.

here's what would happen

we would meet at bar, I'd try to talk him out of it by buying him a drink

he might settle down and have a drink, he might want to still "beat my sorry ass"

we might step outside

he might throw a punch

some things would happen that might make him realize I take tae kwon do six nights a week

I would disarm him

we would go back inside and I would try to buy him another drink

dude needs to seriously stop with the hatred though

Spade, this is Lovie's 3rd year as head coach so technically we're in year 3 of the "four year plan." If you don't think the Bears can stand up against any team in the AFC with our defense, you're crazy. And by the way, our entire o-line may be signed up next year but they're also older than dirt even THIS year.

LAST year is the one they were a year away from a Super Bowl.

Bears-Chargers, Bears would lose handily IMO. Tomlinson would run all over us without Mike Brown. The only reason the Bears were able to shut down the Jets last week was because the Jets have no running back. Without Mike Brown, good running backs run all over us. Have you seen the rush defense splits with and without Brown? It's shocking. SD's defense is also very very good when they have everyone in, and Rivers looks as good or better than Grossman right now.

Bears-Patriots on a neutral field, I like our chances to compete, but I'm not sure we can win. The Patriots are thinner than they've been recently but Brady is still a winner in the playoffs and Belichick has been through enough of these battles.

Bears-Colts on a neutral field I REALLY like our chances. Colts rush defense is terrible and plays right into the Bears hands.

Trouble is, I see either SD/NE getting through.

With Mike Brown in they were allowing 74 yards/game rushing

since his injury:

SF 130 yards rushing
Miami 161 Yards rushing
NYG 150 Yards rushing
NYJ 108 Yards rushing (without a real fucking running back!)

And three of those teams are mediocre to bad.

Could you imagine what LT would do? Ruh roh.
