I thought the Brosnan movies were okay but they just felt like generic action movies instead of a JAMES BOND film.

The director of this one also did Goldeneye, I think.

I liked this one a little better than that.

Just make sure you all order Bollinger champagne for New Years. The problem with the last 20 or so Bond films, and what would most likely be the problem with a new Indiana Jones flick is the emphasis is almost entirely on the special effects and stunts.

I'd rather watch a LeCarre-esque espionage thriller, one without over-the-top chases and silly explosions.

Nope. Just Goldeneye and this one.

He also did the, uh, Zorro movies.

so everyone liked it huh?

my take:

I like Daniel Craig as an action star. I'm not sure if I like him as Bond or not. I didn't really like the movie though. That's more of the result of a weak plot/storyline than being Craig's fault. The love story and long card-playing scenes dragged on too long and there wasn't really much of a singular larger than life archvillian/evil plot to be foiled. When it was over, I kinda felt oh that's it. I see enough potential in Craig to go see the next one assuming their will be another movie with Craig as Bond, but I'm hoping that they develop a more interesting storyline next time.

this is pretty much exactly how i felt. i didn't like the love story at all and didn't understand the poker. but i did think the action scenes were very good.

I saw it yesterday (we missed the opening sequence due to my own tardiness, though) and I think I liked it a little more than you, but generally felt the same 'mehness' regarding a lack of a prominent villain.

I'm totally sold on Craig as Bond, though.

This was pretty good. Low-key like the awesome Connery movies, rather than the over-the-top Moore and Brosnan ones. Did kind of drag along at the end though.

I also loved how that one character's entire point was to explain things to the idiotic audience ("see, he's doing that twitchy thing he does when he bluffs", "there's xxx million on the table now!"). "Loved".

I dreamed about her last night. I want to see The Dreamers now.

Yeah, Craig is the antithesis to Brosnan's pretty-boy Bond. He's rugged and believable.

Loved this movie. Of course the beginning action scene with the crane, etc. was pretty unbelievable, but movies are fiction. I do have to say that the ending threw me for loop. The characters drew me in and I knew half of what happened would happen, but I didn't see it coming.

Good stuff.

I liked it a lot. Thought the love scenes up until the end part were okay but that section near the end where it was like 3-4 scenes in a row of them making out, sailing around, running errands was kind of lame.

One spoiler question...

Didn't Bond get shot in the head near the end? Or was that Le Chiffre?

The Brosnan movies were flash and glitz. But I don't bame that on Brosnan. I thought he was the second-best Bond behind Connery.

SMERSH (or whatever they decided they were for this movie) kill Le Chiffre because he lost their money, and leave Bond alive (in the book they carve something into his hand to mark him as a spy).

I agree. Then we have the Lazenby film, which was one of the best movies with the worst Bond. The more I watch the Roger Moore films as an adult, the more I'm convinced that even Timothy Dalton was better.

I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. I'm a daniel craig fan anyway, but i thought that he did a pretty great job unraveling the origin of Bond's career and how he kind of grew into it. i think that it's going to hold up to rewatching, as I think of some of Eva Green's reactions to situations and now knowing what her character already knew.

Is it too early to discuss this movie with spoiliers?

Spoiler below...

Rather than the whole elevator deal at the end, I'd've rather seen Bond kill her, take the money, and then cut to the last seen.

Also, how they manage to shoot up a tanker full of Jet-A and not have it explode is beyond me. Ditto a truck spewing Jet-A and crashing through all sorts of metal on metal (i.e. sparks) made that whole chase scene rather silly.

Other than that, I thought the flick was great.

If I recall correctly, in the book she just kills herself.

Which is funny since you'd think that being, Hollywood, they'd have as many explosions as possible.

Which she kind of does in the movie. She takes the key out of the elevator lock and pushes herself away from the door that Bond is trying to get in.

I was hoping they'd show the other guy actually being blown up.

I enjoyed this. A bit over the top at times, but I like the bloddier, guttier style Bond.

Spoiler

I really thought they were gonna end it once Bond found out who was behind the whole Vesper plot, and then that would be the basis for the sequel.

Wonder where they take it next. And I wonder what this does to Craig's career (speaking strictly in the films that are NOT Bond films sense)
