Unlistenable music. For me this goes into the file with Rabbit Coat and Anthony and the Johnstons... ugly music with no particularly interesting reason for tolerating the blech factor.

Wow, Harry. That's a strong dislike. You don't find the song structures beautiful? I don't hear any ugly in Newsom's songs. Sure, I hear weird vocals, but in the service of lovely. Unless you have a specific definition of what you consider ugly. Newsom seems to be to be all about not-ugly, so far as I can tell.

I like her regardless.

I really like the first two songs, even though this would typically not be my thing at all. I'm still having trouble getting through the whole thing. Maybe if I buy it, I'll have more motivation. "Only Skin" seems like a chore though - 16:00

I don't find her polarizing at all. She's okay.

Sprout & the Bean was a great song, good enough to overcome the voice thing. Kinda shits me how she must have felt compelled to sing like that to sound different, though.

That said, i have only heard one song from this new one.

Joanna's music is worse than the holocaust - from what I've read was pretty terrible.

But you guys are missing the point - she plays a HARP and sings meandering epics in a grating elfin voice. That shit is ART.

That means no where I come from
I am cold, out waiting for the day to come
I chew my lips and I scratch my nose
Feels so good to be a rose

Oh don't, don't you lift me up
Like I'm that shy, no no no no no, just give it up

See, there are bats all dissolving in a row
Into the wishy-washy dark that can't let go

And I cannot let go
So I thank the lord
And I thank his sword
Though it be mincing up the morning, slightly bored

Oh oh oh, morning
Without warning
Like a hole
Oh, and I watch you go

There are some mornings when the sky looks like a road
There are some dragons who were built to have and hold
And some machines are dropped from great heights lovingly
And some great bellies ache with many bumblebees
And they sting so terribly

I do as I please
Now I'm on my knees
Your skin is something that I stir into my tea
And I am watching you
And you are starry, starry, starry

And I'm tumbling down and I check a frown
Well, just look around
That's why I love this town
To see me:
Serenaded hourly
Celebrated sourly
Dedicated dourly

Waltzing with the open sea
Clam, crab, cockle, cowrie...

Move over Percy Shelley!

That's the best compliment I've received this year.
