i got ziggy stardust in march 2003 and had only heard its singles beforehand. i loved it - one of my favorites. and, yeah, you people with older siblings or even parents who liked music shouldn't take them for granted. i've been catching up since high school.

I am ready to commit Soylent Green. Or perhaps will take my wolfskin to a distant part of the forest to await the bear's gnashing teeth to rip me to the next bardo.

I prefer The Man Who Sold the World... a dark work that sounds more alien than the glam masterpiece Ziggy. Hunky Dory and Aladdin Sane help constitute one of the greatest four album runs ever. They were so good then is why in the last 20 years I still try to listen to the crap he puts out.

Damn those who were once so good that you still feel obligated to check out their mediocre new stuff!

(Bowie's on the "buy it used" list nowadays.)

Another point on which we agree. Even the "I can out-Bolan Marc Bolan" falsetto is endearing.

Count me in the MWSTW crowd too. But Ziggy is a great album regardless. I got into Bowie in 94 after buying the 808 State remix of Sound + Vision only to realise the original was much better

Hunky Dory is another good one.

his finest hour IMO.

Yeah...that's my favorite too.

Although on another day it may be Ziggy...those go back and forth for me.

I think H.D. may be my favorite too, but I also think that it only beats out Ziggy because I've had less exposure. There are more Ziggy songs on the radio than there are songs from Hunky Dory on the radio. And that keeps it fresher for me.

So... yeah, pick up Hunky Dory. And Ziggy is the shizit. I also happen to have it with me at work today.
:D

Thanks for sharing. I always love hearing stories like these.

I've always loved Hunky Dory but I must admit that Ziggy is much more consistent. They're are a few songs on HD that either suck or do sound a littled dated. Still HD remains my favorite.

With Ziggy as a starting point:

2) Aladdin Sane
3) Hunky Dory
4) Diamond Dogs
5) Station to Station
6) Scary Monsters

Low/Heroes/Lodger are much different and should be gotten later on.

I like the first three or four songs on "Man Who Sold the World", but the Ryko bonus track of "The Supermen" on "Hunky Dory" completely slaughters the overwrought original, and "Running Gun Blues" and "She Shook Me Cold" are inexcusably poorly written songs barely held together by Ronson's guitar playing. Diamond Dogs is a way, way better album overall.

Thanks. I'm going to get a lot of these since I have this deal with BMG right now where if I buy one CD I get each additional CD for $2, so it will be more a matter of the order in which I listen to these.

Just when I thought I was too cynical for an album to really get to me anymore, and album like this comes around and makes me feel like a 9 year old kid again!

i'd scoop up everything from "man who sold the world" through "scary monsters" except that live stuff. (in fact, i did this between 2005 & 2006.)

I went through the same revelation about six months ago. Absolutely fantastic album from start to finish.
