applying for this job and it says "submit salary requirements with resume"

if they choose me-do they try to whittle this number down?
or
is this their way of finding the lowest bidder?

currently, im in a situation where i don't make what i should
but i stay because i can slack and spend most of the day trying to sell my artwork on the netweb and its a pretty decent position for resume building
...
but every chart that i look at says i should get 15k more
(even in a shitty little river town)
and the dude i replaced at this job was making 25k more

the thing is
i'd gladly switch jobs for just a little bit more-just to stay sane
just for a change of scenery and product-line

so do i bid low for what im willing to take OR bid high for what i actually want to make?

advice?

Think about it this way: salary. requirement. Ask yourself this question: How much money do I need to make doing this job worth my time?

As for low balling/high balling, I would never low ball. Just ask for what you think you are worth (including insurance and any other compensations that you feel like you need) and then concentrate on convincing them why you are the actual right person for the job (like what do you have that they need)

i always ask for 5-to-10k more than i want cuz they always end up offering less, most of the time ending up in a back-and-forth to reach a compromise.

This is the right answer.

As my boss always used to say:
"How'd you get your fist blow job?"

You asked for it!

This is a tricky one. You don't want to lowball yourself, but if you shoot too high, they'll eliminate you from the get-go. They'll eventually learn your salary history, so they won't be willing to go more than 10-15% above what you're making now. Go for a 10% jump.

For my current gig, I asked for 10% in my salary requirements and actually got 20! Of course, I r00l, because I am the exception to the rule. FT is a valued commodity, my friend. I don't come cheap...and at my age, sometimes not at all. *rim shot*

Ask for something in the range of possibility, but (as has been said0 do NOT lowball yourself.

If they like anything about you on paper, it's nothing to them whatsoever to say "what about less money?" They know what's up. Put something fair down and work from there.

My friend just got an offer Monday from CBS News and it's like a 50% increase with no moving involved - and he wasn't doing bad to start with.
Add in the interview he had yesterday w/ the New York Times and he's in a pretty damn enviable position.

Lesson learned: make them believe you're worth what you reasonably want to make.

I just had to fill one out yesterday, and it was online. Thus, a mandatory field, with no "blank" option.

They ask that as another way to screen out applicants. If you put too much, your resume/letter/application is tossed.

What counselors generally recommend is putting something vague like salary requirements flexible depending on job requirements. That way you don't get screened out for asking for too much or for ignoring the question.

Its always best to get into negotiations after you've had a chance to impress them rather than before. Of course, if you find yourself in squirrgel's position, you are screwed. In that case, I'd be honest but not aggressively high. You can still try to negotiate up from what you put if they like you.

Not that I have gotten any of these jobs, but I usually ask for the same amount as most governmental jobs I apply for or what I'm worth based off of my educational level. If a person with a MA is typically making atleast 35,000, I'm going to ask for close to 35,000.
I never lowball, since I already have a job paying a lowball figure.

*Hits her head on the glass ceiling*

Um, guess "fist" was a Freudian slip.

re: the salary thing: I'd say it really depends on the situation. I once applied for a job online and had the potential employer email me back right away asking about my salary expectations. It was hard to figure out because I'd actually be moving to a new city with a high cost of living. In the end she replied and said I had quoted too high. I wrote back explaining that it was hard to know given that it's a different city but that I'd be willing to accept what they were offering. In the end she never replied. I felt shity about it until a friend pointed out that I probably wouldn't have wanted to work for someone like that anyway--playing games 'n all. I know it was the kind of place that just used and over-worked people.

Conversely, when they asked me about salary expectations in my interview for my current job I said "junior" because I know that I'm a spring chicken in my field. I also picked up the sense during the interview that most people I was up against had about 10-20 years experience. But "junior" is relative too because the stated salary range was reasonable to begin with.

Not exactly an answer, but some things to consider.

Don't go wild with it, but be sure not to sell yourself short either.

That's what the one yesterday did, where it was a mandatory field. "I see you're expecting $XX,XXX, but this position pays (1/2)$XX,XXX." I knew it was coming, because it was a Bachelor's job with little experience required, but I was encouraged to apply.

I'd just ask your current boss for $20K more. that still makes you cheaper than the last guy and you get all the side perks from being a lazy-ass.
