Madtown is the only reason not to give WI back to the feathers for casinos.

That's the posh East Side, Ky.

The North Shore -- where all the Irish lawyers & Jewish doctors live -- is just up from it.

I read an article yesterday that said, on a list of 20 famous politicians today, John Kerry finished LAST. The list included people like Hillary, Bush, Obama, Giuliani, McCain, etc. That's gotta hurt. It's basically saying "we know who you are, and we don't like you."

I just hope that the 2008 democratic race isn't as crowded as last time around.

This year is so wide open on both sides, its conceivable you'll have 9-10 folks on both sides that form an exploratory committee and/or raise money for a potential run.

"B-1" Bob Dornan is considering a run for the GOP nom.

Exploratory committee, fine...but if it doesn't look like things are going to pan out and there are some other decent candidates, it would be advantageous to drop out. I think it portrays a certain sense (justified or not) that there are no good candidates being put forth by the party, as well as a sense of disunity. At least that's how I felt with the 2004 election.

He and Tom Tancredo whould team up to be the GOP's "Ideas Candidacy" ala Kucinich.

Primaries are good an healthy, and to me, convey the opposite message. The party shouldn't be choosing candidates, the people should. And they choose them based on who, out of how many candidates there are, is the best.

Also, 97% of the country doesn't pay attention until after Labor Day of Election Year, so its not too serious.

Yeah they talked about that poll on Countdown last night. If it's the same poll it's was poll on likeability. I don't put too much into it but then again people have to like you to get elected.

Guiliani was #1 on there. I don't know much about the way he governs but they said last night that likeability was the least of his virtues. Yes people respect him for his leadership on 9/11 but they said he can be a shrewd politician as well.

I think it also shows that you can put a fork in Kerry as a presidential candidate.

Yeah, because dudes like Alan Keyes and Gary Bauer were really pulling in people from the middle at some point.

Bob Dornan, jesus christ; I though he and his ilk had been shipped off to Vesco Island decades ago.

exactly why I love Louisiana's open primary system. People have derided it for years and have tried to change it but I think we're the only ones who got it right.

I remember studying that in an International Politics class in Pol Sci school. Very interesting. :D

Hey, I voted for Keyes in the '00 primary because A) he jumped into a mosh pit to get Michael Moore's vote and B) he was the only candidate who didn't drop out before the Colorado primary not named "Gore" or "Bush." McCain vs. Bradley would have been my dream race, and we the people fucked it in its stupid ass. Way to tell the people that your vote counts, kids.

So let me get this straight -- in Louisiana, you can vote for who you want to be the democratic candidate and who you want to be the republican candidate?

No. Everyone goes in a big pot. Democrats, Republicans, Greens, Libertarians, Whigs, American Independents, No-Nothings, everyone. In the primary, you just pick who you want.

If one candidate wins a majority, then that candidate wins. Period, no run-off. If no candidate wins a majority, then the top two candidates, regardless of party, in total votes have a run-off. It could be a Democrat & Republican, two Democrats (see: Landrieu & Nagin for Mayor of New Orleans), two Republicans or whatever.

The whole thing is wide open, and I really like it, especially compared to Maryland. Here, you have to be a Democrat or Republican to vote in the primary, and you can only vote within your political party. If you're a registered Independent, you can only vote in the general election. In some states (I think Michigan is one), if you are registered as an Independent, you can choose your primary.
