I signed up for BMG a while back, and not only do I always forget to cancel the monthly featured selection, I'm so lazy that I rarely go to the trouble of returning the selection when they send it. Though, the stuff they send is fairly decent: Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Wilco Live, and whatnot.

One day I thought, maybe I should check the status of my account online. To my surprise, I am eligible for 26 free CDs! They are also doing this buy-one-get-four free deal right now. I picked out 40 CDs I want, and if I redeem 10 of my free CDs, my total is $225 after shipping and handling. A hefty sum, 'tis true, but that comes out to $5.63 per CD. It could be lower of course were I to redeem more CDs, but this buy-one-get-four free deal is pretty good so I want to take advantage of that now.

The question is: is it really a good idea to get 40 CDs at once? How do I even begin to tackle such an overwhelming amount of new music?

if ya got the dispensable income, go for it....the cd's won't rot. you'll play em as you get to em.. 5.63 per is pretty damn good deal!

yes, it's daunting. i can barely handle 5 albums at once. (one or two always get left behind and found again months or even years later.) if you're one of those people who must listen to everything you own once before shelving it, don't go through with this.

I'd say not a good idea. $5.63 doesn't sound like its much different from the average price if you only buy your one full price cd and take all your freebies so why place such a large bulk purchase?

I don't think there is ever 40 cds that I really want at any given time from BMG (even being a fan of the club) and chances are something(s) will either get lost in your collection or be something(s) you lose interest in listening to that much before you've had a chance to enjoy it with that size purchase.

I agree with billy g.

Plus $5.63 is about the same as what yourmusic charges normally - $5.99. And they have pretty much the same selection, right?

It's just so hard to whittle down this list, now that I've created it and gotten excited about each CD! You guys make some good points though...still not decided what I'll do.

I'm a little embarrassed about my list, honestly...it contains a lot of CDs that I really should have by now! Seriously though, I'll post it later, I have a meeting in a few minutes and will be busy the rest of the day.

Getting more than 10 CDs at a time is a bad idea. Not that that's ever stopped me.

First thing I do after a crazed CD shopping frenzy is put 'em in alphabetical order and listen through the whole stack once over however many days it takes. This at least prevents me from focusing on the choicer titles and not giving others a fair shot. (For some reason, I've got a tendency to listen to my used purchases less than I listen to CDs bought new. As if I've got to squeeze more value out of discs I paid more for.)

If there are CD's that you want to replace or that you fel are classics, I would do it. You can get quite a bit of good stuff and complete some discographies that way, if you are into it.

I have 10 cd's on order from BMG.

eazy-e eazy-duz-it
willie nelson stardust
the diplomats diplomatic immunity
cam'ron purple haze
motley crue theatre of pain
motley crue shout at the devil
motley crue too fast for love
cinderella night songs
david bowie hunky dory
priestess hello master
annie anniemal

I never order the featured selection though and I really just want to buy that one cd and get out of the club because Yourmusic has the same selection and free shipping.

if you want to do it and can't whittle the list down just know that you are guarenteed to miss something good in there. i'm of the opinion that more than a few cds at a time is hard to digest.

but, seriously, don't be afraid to post the list. you'll get honest opinions here--i can assure you of that. and, man, fuck anyone who gives you shit for not already owning a cd that you should already own.
