so what did you do to limit them?

Installed a mod that hides 0-count posters (as I suspected, the higher your member count the more attractive the board to spammers) and another that hides certain registration fields so that if a bot submits a registration with those fields filled in, the registration is rejected and the IP address is autobanned.

Shiv--where is the thread about your visit?

i didn't really make one. i'll remedy that.

Not bad, got rid off thread very quick. Could we change Rock/Pop to Football?

Or could you ask that the jocks keep it to one thread?

Huh, I don't think it changed people's post counts. Just the join dates listed on the member list.

Usual, pretty much. This time though, it was a non-sensical (non threatening) title, then the usual inside.

Don't suppose anyone remembers the poster's name.

Just wanted to confirm that these spam filters aren't blocking out any new threads today. That's not the reason for the lameness of the front page is it? Spam might be a welcome relief. Cats got any interesting videos of people pooping?

I just realized that those join dates come from the CMJ (Version II) board. I liked the Obner join date better because 1969 doesn't have anything to do with anything.

Wait a minute…

After I posted that saw that the Rock/Pop forum has reverted back. It's the memberlist feature that I was looking at. Strange, two different things going on.

No, I wasn't.

I would think that the bots don't care about member counts. They just look for any board. I wonder how they go about selecting a particular forum in which to post. (Assuming the bots/ spammers don't post in every forum.)

I'm not sure we're dealing with bots. For humans, it makes sense to try to find forums (maybe they use a specialized search query for this) with lots of members so they don't waste their time registering at a forum with 12 members.

That makes sense too.
I was wondering how a bot would register with the email and then confirm the registration and then log in with their new password.

It's probably easier than it sounds.

The reason I thought it was a bot is because I have seen spam on this board which is identical to other boards I go to. And they are boards which have no affiliation with music and such. Cell phone forums, computer repair forums, etc...
