Power-pop singer/guitarist Mike Viola was born and raised in Boston, issuing a self-released solo album before teaming with schoolmate Todd Foulsham in the short-lived 80s band Snap! Viola and Foulsham then relocated to New York City and formed the Candy Butchers; Viola also played with local pop bands including Ivy and They Might Be Giants' John Flansburgh's side project Mono Puff. With Ivy's Adam Schlesinger, he co-wrote and sang the title song to Tom Hanks' 1996 rock-'n'-roll comedy That Thing You Do!; that same year the Candy Butchers signed to Blue Thumb and issued their debut EP Live at La Bonbonniere. The duo's self-titled debut LP went unreleased after Blue Thumb went bankrupt, however, and in 1999 the Candy Butchers finally landed at the Sony affiliate RPM to issue Falling into Place.

Good call on Mike Viola, Timis. I think I've got 3 of the Candy Butchers releases, and all are good...Falling Into Place is probably the best. Hang On Mike from 2004 has some really nice, understated moments. Like in "Kiss Alive II":

About the funniest guy I know. Sad to see you go
So glad we made it. So glad we stayed friends after all

Peavey amps and roto toms Butchered our favorite songs
No harm in trying. We had fun trying after all

I gave you Bennie and the Jets. You gave me Kiss Alive II
I gave you Bennie and the Jets. You gave me Kiss Alive II

Definitely recommended if you're into Fountains of Wayne.

Candy Butchers was one of the last things I picked up but then put back in my Tower Records scavenging the other day. Maybe it'll still be there next time I go in.

Mike Viola's a big part of Bleu's L.E.O. project that was discussed in this thread.

I do like Jellyfish so I'll check them out. Not as familiar with Sweet or The Posies, but I've heard of them.

When I think of Fountains of Wayne I think of that "Stacy's Mom" song, which I never liked much. Is that indicative of how they normally sound?

no. quite possibly their crappiest song, of course that's the tune that the record industry pushed on the unwashed masses. And of course they bit, hook line and sinker. I blame Rachel Hunter.

I hadn't heard about that L.E.O. project but as soon as I get a free moment to myself, i'm looking for it at Waterloo. Is it on e-music? Bums me out that i can't browse e-music from work.
