riiiight, because honkies who want to appear down never ever listen to top 40 drug dealin murder rap. and they never ever lord the fact that they listen to such rap over the other honkies who listen to backpacker shit in order to prove that they "get it" and are more in touch with genuine street culture than their equally pasty compadres. clearly. :)

that being said, there's still tons of great hip hop and rap being turned out today, you just have to look a little harder for it. even a few years ago there was a lot of really weird, interesting beats making it into heavy commercial rotation, but a lot of the people making them have creatively stagnated (i'm looking in your direction, neptunes.) i could handle the non-existent lyrical skills of a lot of mainstream rappers if they were riding really hot beats.

trill=true and real, or notably, particularly real.

I can't really appreciate the stuff anymore. I'm like Bloor, a huge fan in the 80s and early 90s, then pretty much nothing. I personally find most of what I hear nearly unlistenable. I think the only post-90s hip hop I own is the last two Roots albums. Other than that my listening is still practically exclusive to these two, which still kick my ass:

Naw, there's lots more sung choruses and more emphasis on global dance hit over lyric.

And way too much Timbaland and Diddy.

Timbaland used to be great. There's now way too much actual Timbaland, the artist, not the producer. He needs to stop featuring himself going "yeah" in peoples videos. It's irritating.

My idiocy is most often a matter of not bothering to put my whole point in a post.

I dig what I dig, and try to turn on hiphopheads I know onto some things that probably flew under their radar. I'm not exclusive to underground by any means though. Production gets me off more than the MC sometimes. Bottom line, if its good to my ears, then I'm libel to pick it up.

i voted some good some bad. there are literally hundreds of rap songs that i enjoy, but on album scale, i find most artists don't cut it. i don't know if hip-hop is more a singles-based genre than other genres but it's only once in a grand while that i'll enjoy a hip-hop album from start to finish. i'd rather listen to mixes and mash ups.

also, my experience at hip-hop shows is slim to nil, but the few "bigger" acts i've been to have been like 60% entertaining and 40% "watch the mc pace around the stage, give shout outs, and do a bunch of posturing". I saw Jurassic 5 once and they were pretty cool. They just did their raps with no bullshit. At the end they said "Thanks for not throwing stuff at us."

hip hop isn't an album oriented or live genre.
at least not in my eyes.

most of the shows suck, most albums are bloated.

since i stopped DJ'ing i slowed down on my keepign up with every single song that comes out, but i still try and keep up through mix tapes and such. Not that many songs have kicked my ass this year, but one thing i learned from DJ'ing is that lots of "stupid club songs" can become your favorite after the 20th listen. I suppose part of that is the community aspect, seeing people excited, feeling their excetiment, ect.

so while part of me thinks this year was a let down, the other part knows it's just because i wasn't paying as much attention.

i really like the Killer MIke album.

i'm mostly into underground hip hop but i do like some of the commercial stuff too (juelz santana, diplomats, t.i.). i'm not really a fan of southern hip hop mostly because they tend to rely on catchphrases too much to the point where it becomes annoying. MIKE JONES! Jeezy's 'yeaaaaaaaah'.

i've seen some really good hip hop shows this year too. ghostface, stones throw, percee p.

and i think timbaland would've probably be in line for producer of the year, until the clipse album came out.

I can't stand any current mainstream rap.

I hardly listen to any but what I do like falls into one of two camps.

Older: De La Soul, Digable Planets, Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy, Dream Warriors

or

The Indie Rock Version Of Hip-Hop: The Streets, Dizzee Rascal, Lady Sovereign, k-os

Old KY is funny.

I said: Some good, some bad. Just like every other musical field you idiot.

This is probably a good thread for me to request a "crunk vs. hyphy" distinction. I understand they are from different regions, but can you headz tell one from the other just by listening to it? If so, how? Tempo?
