I picked up 'let it be' recently and I'm enjoying it. I was curious what obner consensus was.

It's really a mood thing, but for their most consistent, I have to go with Tim.

I vote Let It Be - it's sorta the bridge between the drunken louts and the semi-pro band - but there's no wrong answer.

I love the story about the recording of Hootenanny, where the band just drunkenly fucks around in the studio and then when they're finally ready to record they're told "sorry guys, you're outta time - that's your album."

I vote Tim, with Let It Be following a close second.

Reminds me of a recording session in college when our singer though he had the "night off" because he figured it would take us longer to do our parts--he proceeds to drain a bottle of Jack; Longstoryshort, he ended up having to play and sing one song basically propped up in a chair---And turned in one of the best performances I've ever heard. (the song is called "Nothing to Prove and Loogar and Busty Rhodes (who played drums on it) will attest to its power) Sure it had mistakes but we couldnt even afford to be in that studio sweeping up, let alone recording.....

I voted Let It Be. Its just one of those records, ya know?

I voted for Pleased to Meet Me, because (along with Nothing's Shocking by Jane's Addiction), it was my "gateway album." However, I hold the fondest of places in my heart for the unfairly maligned Don't Tell a Soul.

Westerberg on Don't Tell A Soul:

"That record is better than it sounds. It sounds dated, but if you go back and strip the tape, there are some spunky songs. It was overworked and overcooked."

"It was pretty much me and Slim crafting that record. It sounded good until the label brought in people to mix it to make it sound like everything else on the radio, so it sounds dated. People ask "how did Paul get that sound on Mono?" Well, that sound was on every Mats recording - it's just marked Take One."

I reckon I'll chip in with my favorite Mats "drunk/studio" ancedote - the one where another band comes into the studio after the Mats had been there recording ("Pleased", I think ) all nite.

Guy from the band asks "How did they get the vomit on the ceiling?" And the guy from the studio just shrugs and sez "I guess they threw it up there."

As far as "best album" goes...there isn't one. You have to buy them all to get the whole picture.

BTW - I'm seeing Westerberg for the first time EVER in March. Yay me.

Did PW come your neighborhoods back in 2002? That was my first and so far only chance to see him, but so far I haven't seen any dates making it up here.

It was a cool show, no pretense at all. Laid back and fun.
