the dude is most likely going to Baltimore for prospects.

I hear he only has to pass a physical and he's gone.

Waitttaminnit. Prospects? The Orioles don't have prospects.

This will be a disaster. He will be on the DL by Independence Day. Glenn Davis, Pt. 2.

I think Chicago get's Ripkin's oldest son. Isn't he 12 or so? He should be taking the field soon!

This doesn't really make sense to me if it's for prospects. If it is, that must mean that the Cubs are paying a lot of Sosa's hefty contract.

I thought they only way they could trade him is if they basically swap bad contracts with another team.

And as much as I wanted Sosa off the team, I'm not sure if trading him at this point would be the best move for the Cubs. I'd like to hear more details about this.

they are rumored to be paying 17 million to get rid of him and he is waiving 18 million of his option for an additional year

Okay, I read some of the rumors. It's not close to 100% yet, so I don't think they're at the "He just needs to pass a physical" phase.

There's speculation that the Cubbies could get Hairston Jr. for the bench, the combine the Orioles prospects with some of their own for Aubrey Huff from the Devil Rays. That deal would be beyond spectacular.

They're rumored to be paying 17 million, timmy? That's insane, that's the entire contract. That means they won't be saving any money if that's true.

This is exciting!

keeping him would seriously fuck up the team chemistry. it's already fucked up, as much as they say "ohj if he apologizes, blah blah blah." he has to go.

the cubs will get hairston to play LF, and use the draft picks to get Aubrey Huff to play RF. or maggs.

Oh, I definately agree it will help team chemistry. I was just worried at first that it wasn't a good trade because I thought it was just for prospects. Most likely Hendry will swing those prospects for Huff.

There's also talk of either closers Julio from Baltimore or Baez from Tampa Bay being included in the final deal. If Hendry gets Hairston Jr., a closer, and Aubrey Huff for Sosa, he really is a god.

Word up! It's about time. Harriston is actually a native of Naperville, which is just weird. My friend played ball with his younger brother (diamondback) for years.

How about this new Beck??

This would require one of the prospects traded to turn into Curt Schilling, Pt. 2. But, from the look of the Orioles farm, I don't even see a Pete Harnisch, Pt. 2.

Could it be that the Sox will take Chicago by storm now that mighty Sammy has left?

Speed and Defense... the 2005 White Sox!

They've got Podders now so, if that bastard can actually hit for average/establish a high OBP, they've got a chance, Magglio or no Magglio....

Huff/Hairston/Patterson is a formatible outfield, perhaps more so that Alou/Patterson/Sosa (though I hate to admit it). If a closer's coming over too, Van Damme...

I always find his stances ironic. He's a trial lawyer, and HUGE Democratic donor, but in baseball he takes one of the hardest lines against the union.

As a trial lawyer, you would expect him to, you know, respec the rights of the people, and then he fights DC's team tooth and nail.

Just an observation.

The baseball players association isn't a union---its a trade association. They only call it a "union" to generate sympathy like they are working 18 hour days in a cannery for 23 cents and a handful of corn meal

Greed beats the people every time, though I think a more valid argument would be: Why not have another team down the road? You can only use it to your advantage in terms of promotions, rivalries, etc. I mean other teams/cities do just fine with it....

Sometimes it takes few words to say so much. Nice take rp. Unfortunately for the O's they have been doing shit like this since 1996.

To tell you the truth, the O's aren't going to win more games than the Yanks or Sox, they spend money like a drunken sailor on an ether binge and their owner is an egomaniac Howard Hughes wannabe. They aren'y paying for shit of the Sosa contract. I say fuck it, buy the ticket, take the ride. Sell some tickets. Hell, sell tickets to BATTING PRACTICE. Give Sammy his own Goddamned BRAND of corked bat. Fuck it. The Orioles ain't winning shit. At least make it entertaining.

Latest word has it that the Cubs aren't going to be able to get Huff ar any other promising OF with any of these prospects, and that they're going to have to use Farnsworth and prospects to get a decent OF...
This just makes it a mediocre trade at best - one of those "addition by subtraction" deals...
