get cable for free because i work in the biz (+ internet + phone)
but don't watch it so it's not really a huge bonus
...
but also
i put a gloryhole in the wall and give it my neighbor too

we have a cool agreement
i give him the TV cord and then i can play drums

if he no want me play drums, then nothing comes through gloryhole

I never get to go anywhere anymore and aside from medical bills(which are about to be 100% paid off) and the kids, we don't spend on anything, so yeah we have it. I'd go nuts without it.

Plus we have tivo which is great cause i only really get to watch my shows while nursing, ehich is most of my day.

No cable. Haven't had it in 3 years, since I started living alone. It was never a big deal to me, and the only reason I ever had it before was because of roommates wanting it. Plus I mind paying for it much less when it's being split. No rabbit ears either. My TV is just a corner decoration, really.

If cable were 1/3 of the price, I bet they would have 10 times the subscribers and increased marketing revenue to offset lower subscription prices.

When I lived in Athens, we either stole it or didn't bother, So much more to do.

Living in BFE, we get EVERY channel offered.

I would think they've done market studies. Also I think there is a significant enough population that would pay alot more for cable. I would think the amount of cable subscribers is probably leveling off and it's now about how much value they can add and charge you for it without losing you as a customer.

Given that 85% of US households subscribe to cable or sattelite television (according to the FCC), this seems pretty unlikely timmyjoe

My apartment building got a deal with Time Warner, so i get every station known to mankind. I don't watch 90% of it...

i read somewhere a few months ago, that soon, people will be able to pick and choose exactly what stations they want, and pay per channel instead of getting stuck with a miilion stations they don't want.

I didn't hook it up when i moved to Milwaukee so all the stuff is sitting in a closet...or maybe storage. I still have your mixes laying around somewhere.

actually, the cable company i work for doesn't make a lot of money selling cable

the price that we have to pay the programmers for content
is what sets the price of the cable
...
and to remain competitive we keep it as cheap as we possibly can

Not legitimately, and what we have comes in really poorly. None of the higher up channels like Cartoon Network, Comedy Central, and Sci-Fi are watchable, and those are pretty much the only ones I'd want outside of the news networks that I never actually watch.

I had a roommate at one time who worked for Comcast and should have been able to get us free cable, but they wouldn't come out to our building. Ever since then we've never even considered trying to get legit cable.

I finally upgraded to digital cable a few months ago, but am thinking of removing it for Direct TV instead. Looks like it's a much cheaper deal.

this is in motion, but i believe the cable companies are really fighting it. someone did a study finding that an enormous percentage of american homes only watch about 12-20 channels regularly. these run the gamut from your basics to just sports to just movie channels. it's like i get the golf channel as part of my cable, but i have never watched it. so, under this plan, i'd pick a number of channels (probably around 12-15) and pay much less. the others would be blocked and i'd have no qualms with that. unfortunately, this still looks to be quite a way down the road. cable companies still want to market packages with a ton of channels most people never watch.

According to our more scientific obner poll, only 31% have it (so far)

Haven't had cable in 3-4 years. HDTV plus regular channels all come over the air for frizee, and as long as your tv has an HD tuner built in, you get DAT PBS WIDESCREEN channel, which rocks.

I don't have cable. I have enough simpsons, aqua teen hunger force, home movies, and sealab 2021 dvds to tide me over until, well 2021 probably.
