The thing I love most about our weekly football threads is they are just an opportunity for us to exchange turns kicking each other in the nuts. And that's what life's really all about, innit?

Jesus, the Chargers are looking fucking great right now. Their games are the most exciting things on TV. LT may be on an unstoppable run through the Super Bowl as much as it pains me to say that.

Good GOD this fucker is a maniac. He just carved the Chiefs up like Pesci carves up bodies in Goodfellas.

The presence of greatness, to be sure.

I'd like to preface this with I think that LT is the best player in the NFL right now. He is amazing and should win the MVP hands down.

That being said, I'm tired of people mentioning this freakin single season TD record that he keeps breaking every week.

Is it just me? IMO this record isn't as impressive as people are making it out to be. It's been broken 3 times this decade now (Marshall Faulk, Shaun Alexander, now LT). All were on Super Bowl contending teams.

To get this record, you have to have a great O-line, good passing game to set up the run, and a lot of time a good D to give you a short field.

I have much respect for what he's doing but I'm just as impressed with someone like Frank Gore who is in the top 3 in rushing right now on a horrific Niners team.

Anyone know who held this record before Marshall Faulk and long it stood?

I think it was Emmitt, who had 25 Rushing TDs in 1995(?)

I understand what you are saying, and then you realize that he will have scored, on average, 2+TDs a game. Which is impressive no matter how you slice it.

ALSO: LDT

Derris makes an excellent point (especially the need to be on an elite team). I think the reason that it's such a big deal, though, is the "every week" bit. Tomlinson has broken the record by 3 TDs with two games to play, and that's huge. I forget when Shaun broke the record last year, but I know he played all 16 games. Pre-Faulk-2000, Emmitt had 25 in '95, though I'm not sure if that was new or shared.

What's more impressive is that he's now broken the single-season scoring record, which is 46 years old, by 10 points with two games to play.

Agreed. Held by Paul Hornung who was the halfback and the kicker.

I guess the point I was making with the TD record is that it's 60/40 IMO.

60% is the player's individual effort but I'd say 40% is having a good team putting him in the position to do his thing.

I need to give SK props for being right about the Saints. I was just blinded by the ass-kicking they gave my team, but they sure pulled a Michigan State when they went home and lost to the Redskins. So embarrassing.

Also play-calling. He gets to the point where he's close to breaking the record, and the coaches just keep giving him the ball near the endzone.

For example, one of his touchdowns came with a 21 point lead with 3 minutes to go in the game against Denver last week. On any other team at this point in the season, it'd be a back-up in there or a hand-off to a fullback to kill the clock.
