So the wife's 30th was this past week, and the party was Saturday. Speaking of, if any Madison obs want a Spotted Cow, the keg's still on my back porch. Anywho.

The theme for Saturday was "Your Top 5 Songs Of The Last 30 Years." Everybody brought either a burned disc or an ipod playlist with their picks. I then played a set of 5 at a time without announcing whose it was. All the people who brought music were then eligible to fill out little guess forms as to:

Artist (1pt)
Song Title (2pts)
Album (3pts)
Whose Playlist is it? (2pts)

I took the votes during each song, and kept score in a spreadsheet. The winner gets a $50 gift card to itunes.

Memorable songs include:
Metallica - Battery
NWA - Straight Outta Compton
Steely Dan - Bhodisatva
Captain & Tenille - Muskrat Love
Def Leppard - Animal

etc. Shit was a lot of work, but it was fun. Busty barely edged out my sister in law and another female friend of ours to win it.

Great party yard...

No surprise that Busty won your contest.

Shit was CLOSE. And I think, if it'd gone on for a little longer, he may well have lost it. Not because he didn't know more then the ladies, but because he was getting CRUNK. He started turning in some fuuuunny wrong answers there towards the end. That was a good night.

What a great idea.

Doing each playlist at once is a good call, but I could imagine putting that shit on shuffle and really tearing things up.

Happy belated, First Mate.

I wanted to do that, but the music was in like 5 different formats. SOme people just brought their ipod, and a sheet of paper, and expected me to shuffle through between songs and find them all for them.

One person brought a disc with no info. etc. Took a lot of shucking and/or jiving. Plus, it was funny as hell to see people trying to guess whose five songs these were, especially when Bustette's list was on (NWA).

That sounds fucking awesome, Cap.
I will steal this whence I get around to throwing a housewarming party

If you have a lot of respondants, make it 3 songs each, and get tough about the format / bringing the song info in writing. Makes it much more manageable. Oh, and it's Really Fucking Hard to pick 5 songs. It seems simple enough, and you think you're done like 5 times, but you're never "done." You just keep displacing one song for something else.

Speaking of The Format, oh my god did Busty fall in love with that band. He played me 2 amazing songs by them, and then drunkenly tried to play them again EVERYWHERE WE WENT. Good songs though. Sounded like a great band.

Yeah, I was going to say this must've been a hell of a long party to play 5-song sets (15 min each?) for 20+ people.

3 songs sounds easier.

Great idea for a party.

I got through taking votes for 55 songs, from roughly 13 people voting, according to the spreadsheet. Then my wife's ancient laptop threw a fit and people gave it up.

He's a funny guy. He also had Huey Lewis & The News, and something else like that. It was great to hear random shit coming out of the stereo... Bjork, then Jane's Addiction, then Springsteen, then Metallica, etc.

You know where I stay. Drive by, say howdy, have a beer, meet the wife. I'll be gone in a little bit, but this evening is open as far as I know, unless you want a Noon Beer (and my awe/respect). Either way, I gotta cash that sucker.... had 4 last night.

Yeah great party idea for sure. But I gotta say, I call bullshit on A LOT of those folks selections.

Sorry, THE HUMPTY DANCE was in someone's top 5 of the last 30. I mean if that's true then you should have to leave the party. But it was fun to listen to.

I knew going into that night that I was gonna push The Format on Ky big time just cause I cannot fucking stop listening to it. So it doesn't suprise me that I was harping on it.

Yeah I would go to three songs just for time saving.

We did kind of an impromptu live version of this when me, tj42, NeZ, robotboy, POD and Katie, a princess had suds-n-pie at Chicago's back in 2004. I PW3N3D, and they all will admit as such. Of course, few of them were even born when "Young Turks" was a hit, so I probably had something of an unfair advantage.

What a great idea! I'd love to participate but not organize something like this I think. My main problem is, I only have a few friends who would bring music interesting enough to make this contest fun.

Yep, the other trick is getting someone to run it. I counted almost 500 votes that night - stood for 6 hours. Boo hoo, etc., but remember - while you're running music and counting shit, they're all drinking and sitting down having fun. Still - worth it if you can manage.

Times like that is when you need Bloor and his bingo night experience.
