Ouch. I like the Decemberists but do find this article quite amusing.

I have yet to hear Crane Wife, hoping to get it for Christmas.

the best part is where Colin's girlfriend goes off on Ott in the comments section and Ott gives it right back to her (and Meloy again)

what a bunch of shit. let's see what we have here:

1. Talked -None- about the music,
2. Falsely accused intro voice at a concert of being a "fake british accent" when it was recorded by a brit,
3. Railed on band/Colin for playing anything other than Montana music, whatever that is,
4. Railed on band for being "seemingly" humble,
5. Railed on band for changing gear swiftly between songs (?!?!),
6. Railed on Colin for having "fake british accent," which I've never heard on albums or at a concert,
7. Obviously upset that band got a major label deal,
8. Obviously wasn't at the concert to actually listen,
9. Again, talked not a bit about the music.

I'm not in love with the decemberists, and I don't even have the new album yet, but I have to hate baseless anger like that. It's one of the most apt, striking, clear-cut examples of why people sometimes fucking hate music critics... they can't create anything, and yet feel entitled to go beyond just analyzing music - all the way into "I know why you do everything you do, and it's all fake, and I know it, I just know it, and I'm right, and you suck, and never sing another note, and ... and.... (sniff sniff)" Like a fucking 3 year old with a toothe ache and a thesaurus.

I hate hipsters too. God, I hate the fucking Animal Collective... I gots no love for fairytales and Poo Poo monster shit, but the music is GOOD.

I hadn't noticed the comments section before, priceless! I haven't read this guy before (that I know of), is he always this harsh?

No offense man, but responses like this are part of the reason I enjoyed the article so much. I know the dude didn't talk about the *songs* at all, but he did talk about aspects of their music, namely their lyrical themes and the stylistic delivery, which the writer was unable to get past.

To be fair, the Decemberists do annoy a lot of people and I think that the point of the article was that they are really fucking annoying at times. To say that the impression that their content is needlessly pretentious and seems disingenious doesn't have any less merit than mentioning any other aspect of the music.

Yeah I know. As I type it out and realize how long it is, it occurs to me "it's just ammo." It makes me feel better though. That, and knowing what a lonely, miserable fat fuck that guy probably is. He sure as hell sounds like it, anyway.

Normally, me either. But if there's subtance there, sometimes I find it - especially when the first notes I heard were live. Open mind and all that.

Meloy is Spongebob and Ott is that fat fish who hid the pickles to the Perfect Crusty Burger under his tongue to make Spongebob look bad.

Yep, serves as precedent for this. In both cases, the complaintant was found 100% correct, and given massive damages for time lost, paijn and suffering, and general detriment of the "creator" to society.

I like them a lot, but this album never clicked for me like earlier ones, especially Her Majesty, which I love like crazy.

Couple reasons:
1.) I don't like Genesis so much.
2.) The second song is thirteen minutes long and sounds a lot like Genesis here and there.

Sequencing is pretty vital for me. Early hurdles on a record is a death sentence.

I'm not giving up on them, though. And that Ott article is trash.
