Only five of my top twenty made their top fifty. My elitism is dead. Sweet death. Somehow, I really don't think our list will look as much like this one as some are predicting this year. I could be wrong.

Another sure sign that we are all getting old.

I’ve got something like 110 releases from the year and all I have that makes it on their list:

Sonic Youth
Mastodon
Decemberists
Mission of Burma
Yo La Tengo
Liars
TV On The Radio

Pitchfork=yawn.

Any list that doesn’t include Neko Case’s new album is immediately discounted in my mind as being pointless anyway. I hated it at first and then grew to love it to the point that it may be my favorite of the year.

I'll be willing to bet that, aside from The Truckers, maybe Lucero, maybe La Rocca, and maybe Okonokos, that everyone of the obner top 20 is contained in that last.

Although I will say that I have never even heard of The Knife...wtf?

My top 20 could have as few as 3 (Mastodon, J Dilla, TVotR) but could be up to 5 or 6 depending on what Hold Steady and Cat Power have in store for me the next few weeks.

Be Your Own Pet on a "best of" list? That is so, so wrong.

I've only heard 2 of the top 10 - Scott Walker and TV on the Radio.

You heard Yeti, the list must be ignored.

With writing like this, could it be any more obvious that they don't expect anyone to look at anything but the numbers?

Ys is, without a doubt, one of the most ambitious albums on this list, which is not always a good thing.

This is the first year since 2001 when their #1 choice is something I haven't even bothered to listen to. I don't know if I ever will, either.

The Knife #1? Crazy!

Meh, not a bad list. Guess I'm plenty elitist.

This is a really listless list, with an ellipsis at #1 with the really diluted choice of The Knife, and predictable runners up. Please, we've got to get beyond this website. Who'd have predicted a list of indie schlock interspersed with commercial hip-hop and a few ironic inclusions? Everybody.

The fact that I own 12 of these albums and only consider maybe 5 to be worthy of top-50 status reminds me what a boring year for music this has been.

This was a great year for music. Some of it is represented on that list and some isn't. It's really a pretty average list.

But I have to say that I'm glad to see Man Man in their top 20. I don't expect to see that on too many lists.

I have seen it on 3-4 already. For how bad that is, you should consider it an accomplishment ;)

whatever. wasn't expecting to see knife #1. wondered what would be #1 when tvotr popped up at #2... interesting take on 2006, but easily discardable.

[EDIT: there must be a lot of IDM/elec-type of music fans that comprise that poll.]

OK, it's fashionable to not like this site but if it wasn't for Pitchfork how would we know if American Apparel has a new range of leotards?

 It's even better to go in the store and see the workers actually dressed like that.

And 14 of my top 20 made the list. I'm also glad to see Man Man in the top 20.

and there are definitely a few headscratchers on there.
