He had 60 half-litre bottles of beer in his car as he was going on holiday, and after cracking one open to think about the problem he realised he could urinate on the snow to melt it, local media reported.

He said: "I was scooping the snow from above me and packing it down below the window, and then I peed on it to melt it. It was hard and now my kidneys and liver hurt. But I'm glad the beer I took on holiday turned out to be useful and I managed to get out of there."

Parts of Europe have this week been hit by the heaviest snowfalls since 1941, with some places registering more than ten feet of snow in 24 hours.

I know it's not nearly as cool, but would't the amount of beer he ended up drinking be more than the amount of piss he used to melt the snow, therefore allowing him to get out with a few beers left over to enjoy without being surrounded by snow?

I'm all for drunkenness, but if my ass is stuck in an avalanche, I want to be firing on all cylinders.

The way I understood the story, he was afraid that if he dug his way out, his car would be filled with snow before he had reached the surface. By digging the snow below his window (whether inside or outside of the car, I couldn't tell), and then pissing on it to melt it down, he was able to generate more space by reducing the volume of the snow by melting it. By generating that extra space, he was then able to dig his way out without getting mired in snow.

If this is true, he's really quite the drunken master <rimshot>
