Hey, question for the techies out there...

I've been evaluating IE 7.0 and my company maintains an ftp site for our clients to access project info. With IE 6 and prior versions, you could just type your ftp address in the url field, i.e. ftp://ftp.yourcompany.com, and it would bring up the folders. With IE 7.0, this feature has gone bye-bye. You go to the site, it gives you an error, and you have to choose "Page > open FTP site in Windows Explorer." I had to hunt for that one, because it's not very clear, and the error message certainly doesn't tell you to do that.

So, I guess my question is: does anyone know a workaround for this, i.e. if a person goes to your ftp site via IE 7.0, can you make it default so it automatically opens Windows Explorer for you instead? I've been hunting around online and haven't found anything yet, but you guys never cease to amaze me with your knowledge.... thanks.

I aim to please, Rads. I owe it all to Dr. Ramig, my 12th grade English teacher, and that damned precis writing exercise she had us do over and over... haha.

why would you want it to open in a windows explorer window? its standard browser behavior for ftp sites to display themselves in the browser window (with the exception of safari, which iirc, opens up a finder window automatically).

I know that, that's the problem. With IE 7.0 you CAN'T look at it in the IE browser... you HAVE to open it in the Windows Explorer feature.

edit: so since the feature isn't THERE in IE 7.0 anymore, and they're forcing the users to access it via Internet Explorer, I'd like to know if there's a workaround that will automatically do that for the user.

Wouldn't it be easier to deal with it opening in Windows Explorer and then you can just drag the contents into your own folders from there? I'm not sure how FTP works in IE because I always just use something like Filezilla for those needs, but I'd think you'd want to use something that worked more like WE than IE when viewing folders.

I don't get it. Does does your company only want to allow people to access the server via IE? Why?

What happens in IE7 when you click a link like ftp://ftpserver.com ?

I noticed this a few weeks ago as well D. As far as I can tell, there is no work around that I can find. Just another two or three clicks that I have to walk my clients through. SWEET!

I'll do some more 'exploring' and let you know if I find anything out.
