"Taper Guy" is what my friends and I called that guy that you used to (still do?) see at just about every major and semi-major show in Chicago. He stands at the soundboard, with his microphone and DAT recorder set up --- recording the shows. And always with the band's permission, apparently.

Anyone know if he's on the Net?
Trading tapes?
I would love to see what he's got in his archives and see if he's up for any sort of a trade (if I have anything he would want, that is).

I think that his name is Steve, but I'm not sure.
I'm also pretty sure that the Big Star show I have was his work. But... well, I just wanna know what he has and if there's any chance of my hearing it.

Info?

EDIT: Might be a good topic for the Chicago Reader to do an article on, if they haven't already.

either this guy was before my time or i don't go to any major or semi-major shows because i can't recall a person who i always see near soundboards with gear. and that's the type of thing i'd notice.

Last time I saw him was at Schuba's for the Wrens/Paper Airplane Pilots show a couple of years back. But I haven't been going to shows regularly for 7 years or so now.

So he might be out-of-commission.
Or just getting old, like me.

I know who you're talking about Todd, when my ex was booking Michael McDermott, he taped a bunch of his shows. And yes, I believe his name is Steve. Don't think he's local anymore. Let me ask around for info.

THAT'S HIM!!!
Aadam, not Steve.

I somehow get him confused with the guy who owns Vintage Vinyl in Evanston.

Thank you Rick.

Not the guy I'm thinking of, I've got some older dude in mind.

That looks like who Todd's looking for.

I have the Big Star show from Metro that I saw him taping. I think this is his work:
"When My Baby's Beside Me"

One of the best shows I've ever seen.
