pretty funny stuff. colbert, even for all his shtick and smarminess, is about the best thing going on TV right now.

I'd say the schtick and smarminess are part of the point of his character. Much of what he's parodying is schtick and smarminess.

Yeah, Steve Levitt (Freakonomics author) wrote in his blog how when he went to film his recent interview, Colbert came to him beforehand to make sure Levitt understood that he's not an idiot, just plays one on TV.

Making Colbert even more complicated:

He's a Sunday School-teaching family man in real life and much more middle-of-the-road than Stewart is.

So, when he parodies Uber-Christian belief and posturing, he knows what he's talking about much more than most comics. Most comics have no idea what Christians ACTUALLY believe and think they're all Lil' Falwells.

Colbert smacks his dick at the Falwells while retaining affection for the more reasonable "normal" Goddies.

Very few comedians do that, or ever have.
