Pretty ridiculous really. What the fuck is Rolling Stone these days other than the Us Weekly equivalent of a so-called music magazine to be writing full articles complaining about Pitchfork and folk music?

Well, there's the fact that they're right.

That RS article is one of the dumbest things I've ever read on the internet.

"The only thing that threatens Pitchfork's credibility is Joanna Newsom!"

Except that the opening sentence is "In the history of rock music few artists have benefited as much from the hipster audience’s fear of seeming stupid than Joanna Newsom."

I assure you I like her for reasons other than not wanting to seem stupid. Especially since liking her around these parts seems to brand you as being a moron. And especially since I've made it clear I don't really care what other people think of my taste. I mean, I've admitted I own every Lisa Loeb album and Tiffany's cover of 'I Think We're Alone Now' is one of my favorite songs ever. Surely I have little coolness factor left to protect after that by "pretending" to like Joanna.

I hated her first album, and love Ys. There's no pretending here.

I haven't heard her new album but I kinda liked her last one. Rolling Stone comes off as some old "I don't know what's wrong with kids nowadays" fool from this piece.

rolling stone. what a shitty magazine. i don't really care for or about the record in question, but i would rather have ys crammed down my throat than anything rolling stone has tried to sell me for the last decade.

that's not really a rolling stone article, that's just some blog post they have on their website. The next blog post is abut The Fall, do you really think Rolling Stone talks about The Fall?

i wish.

and i stand by Rolling Stone for their long piece articles, which is kind of like saying you read playboy for the articles . . . but whatever.

Haven't read RS in ages. Are they still doing longer pieces? Who writes for them these days?

besides their political rants (which obviously have a shamless hardcore liberal bent and have to be taken with a grain of salt) they usually have a long piece about stories that generally don't get press elsewhere.

i'm not sure of names of authors, unless it's a big name i don't notice.

that is true. i can't count the number of times that you hear an author quote something "from a piece i did for rolling stone" or similar. i guess that they still pay the top guys when it's worthwhile.

I think the last time I read a RS was way back around the time Oliver Stone's Doors movie was coming out. The issue had a picture of a bare-chested, surly looking Jim Morrison with the tag line, "He's young, He's sexy, And he's dead." And the article didn't live up to the cover.

I'm still a subscriber and still enjoy most of the magazine. What I dont enjoy, I dont read.

Their Top 50 of 2006 is actually pretty decent as well.

I still read it. The reviews have gotten ridiculous, but the political articles have been quite good for several years now. Even though they're along the lines of "Bush is a goddamn evil shit," they most often include views on why he's an evil goddamn shit, with well-researched and posited points. Doesn't mean everything's unbiased, but it is probing, disturbing and needed.

Though it says something sad that two of the loudest non-Olbermann voices of eloquent dissent come from Comedy Central and Rolling Stone. And even Olbermann was once "that sports guy."

This part made me laugh.

I like how every single comment on the blog entry is bashing it or Rolling Stone.

i also find their puff pieces more interesting than most magazines. It's the only magazine i know that can get me to read a 10 page article about N*Sync

The irony is that this list looks almost identical to Pitchfork's only with the Chili Peppers instead of Joanna.

And really, I find it very hard to believe that the RHCP disc is better than the TV On The Radio or Sonic Youth.
