Me and my friends sometimes bring a bunch of CDs over to each other's homes with the sole intention of just sitting there for a couple of hours and listening to a shitton of music.

We all try to outdo each other, too... and see what music we can turn everybody else on to... new stuff that they haven't heard. It was at gatherings like these that I was introduced to:
•Magnetic Fields
•Stereolab
•Caesaria Evora

And that I turned others on to:
•Tom Zé
•Caesaria Evora (good turnaround, eh?)
•Neutral Milk Hotel
•Shrimp Boat/The Sea and Cake (you knew it was coming!)

Anyone still do this? It usually works best with 3-6 people. Any small group isn't worthwhile. Any larger gets unwieldy.

And back in the day, there was fequently some sort of well-contained smouldering substance involved.

My friends in this city listen to Rancid, the Misfits, and Iron Maiden. I don't listen to a lot they'd be interested in.

Don't know if you have these, but this is the type of thinking that I usually bring to these things (if they don't know this stuff):

Rancid... bring some 2-tone ska and/or Operation Ivy.

Misfits... bring some Germs, Circle Jerks, and Fear.

Iron Maiden... DL Dalen's metal of '06 mix onto your iPod and bring that thing along.

Yeah, but I don't like any of those either.

I mean I though OpIvy, Rancid, Misfits, NOFX, etc. were okay when I was fifteen and sixteen but I don't care for them now.

Because I'm not that into punk or metal? That's harsh.

so what did you like about them then that you don't care for now? Cause I liked them at that age, and still like em.

Not sure. It might be a "that place, that time" thing where I still associate all those bands with that period of my life and therefore don't want to be reminded of it.

Or maybe I did "outgrow" them. I mean I still dig Ramones, Buzzcocks, some Bad Religion, and so on but those four that I mentioned I just don't find myself enjoying anymore.

And bands like Circle Jerks, Germs, Black Flag... I was never that into in the first place.

So you bring the Ramones, Buzzcocks, Bad Religion, and such.
The point is just to bring albums that you think your friends haven't heard, but that they'll dig. My examples were just, well, examples.

Capice?

I'm lucky if I can assemble all my friends for a friggin' happy hour, so no, I don't do listening parties. I pretty much make mix cd's with my picks and give them to friends. It's more me forcing my tastes on other people, and typically, turning someone on to something new. But I do have another friend locally who makes mix cd's for me as well, so we're always trading new stuff back and forth.

To play devil's advocate and defend Alongwaltz here, perhaps the lyrical/punk rock ethos of such bands provided him with a certain feeling of angst. Now that he's older that music doesn't instill that feeling, so therefore he cannot connect with it.

I can sorta see where he's coming from, since punk was all I listened to 8th-early9th grade. At a certain point, this led me to independent labels, so I got into other bands that were "punk" but not punk. It kept going, exposing me to more music. I put my punk records on the shelf for awhile, and it wasn't until junior year of college that I started listening to them again. Some were constants though--Misfits, Germs, Ramones. Mostly the bigger bands that everyone knew.

Edit--

Just not to get off subject here, PT thats a rad idea. We used to do that in high school, but I haven't since. I usually turn people onto music by just burning them a copy. Would be cool though to have people over and spin a few records.

we invite people over who like to chow, and we put on vinyl and get them drunk and before you know it they're like, "nina nastasia is my new favoritest artist EVER", or "I never noticed what a good lyricist Elvis Costello is!", and I'm like, I know, have some more alcohol, have you tried this coffee infused Patron?

We actually do an abbreviated version of this before most Hop On Pop/Red Plastic Buddha rehearsals, if anyone has an album that they want the others to hear.

No substances. Much shorter time dedicated to listening. But still fun.

Brought Andrew Bird - And the Mysterious Production Of Eggs for the other RPB guitar player to hear last week. Brought The Format the week before. Reactions are inevitably mixed.

Me and by buddies used to do this, but with Hustlers and Vaseline, instead of CDs.

And Obner is the online version of one of these listening parties.
Nice.
