I noticed that there's lots of diversity within the "indie" singer-songwriter genre but few picks within the blues/jazz/classical/ or even rap categories...not that there's anything wrong with that of course. Maybe I'm just stating the obvious, but many of the lists I've seen look like inbred cousins of each other.

Still waiting for lists of other contributors here who's musical opinions matter to me: Dri, Dalen, dnorwood, Stop Breathin', I'm calling you out. :D

Obner is a by-product of CMJ... as in College Music Journal, which specialized in alternative pop music, or what came to be called in the 90's as "indie."

I put world music, and experiemental electronic/ambient, on my Obner lists when it seems to fit within that demographic or sensibility...

Jazz and classical don't get in the mix... but I buy almost as much of them as "pop."

So where is your list? Is it less incestual?

It doesn't look like anyone else's, I'm kind of proud to say.

What? Your thread has to be some sort of a joke. To me, your list is no more revelatory than anyone else's list on the board. Why does there have to be some jackass on the board who thinks their list is better than everyone else's list? Hence, why I hope this thread was a joke.

Yeah, I don't know who Jon Auer is, but otherwise that list looks pretty dull.

I certainly don't want to fall into the trap of making it look like I think my list is some kind of revolutionary, radical departure from everyone else's. It is, however, the best list on the board. Or at least it will be once I post it.

most of my top 20 are electronic.... like that's any surprise to you all.

Many of your second ten are in my top ten.

Drinky, if you don't know who Jon Auer is, you shouldn't comment.

Oh bullshit. How is he not just another name "within the 'indie' singer-songwriter genre"?

I don't really need to know whether or not he's any good, but the fact that I hadn't heard him doesn't really effect my point about the rest of his list looking pretty dull. Of course, I've heard a few samples of Jon Auer now, and I know he's from The Posies, a band I don't really give a shit about. So guess I can safely say that the entire list looks pretty dull.

Bill Frisell with Ron Carter and Paul Motian, Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau, Kenny Garrett, Branford Marsalis, Dave Douglas, Ornette Coleman: these are all considerations for the top 10 list for me. Quite a few of these will be in my top 10. All of them will be classics I revisit a lot more often and for a lot longer than most of the indie stuff I bought.

On a related note, I recently went to an Outback Steakhouse and was disappointed with their lack of vegetarian entrees.

Amen. But it is a "steakhouse" so I prepare myself before even walking in.

What a total dick move. You essentially call out everyone but three people for being unoriginal and unimportant and then your list is as unoriginal as anyone else's here. Just because you put Prince and Slayer in there, its somehow 'different'? Well, I had Josh Ritter and The Lemonheads in mine, so I'm pretty different too. Awesome!!!

Im kind of glad that I'm not one of the ones who's musical opinions you care about though, after seeing that. And I also hope this thread was a joke, but if it were a joke, it would have to look like another list posted here to truly be effective....

People. People. People.

I never said nor am I saying now that my list any better than anyone else's.

If you passed your 5th grade reading comprehension class you'd see that I was just merely pointing out that many year end lists that I've seen here are very similiar to one another. That's all.

*sigh*

You need to lighten up, Francis. You are a unique and important snowflake too, even if I didn't call your name...okay?

Christ, I'm not saying that everyone who posted their year-end lists were unoriginal or boring either. Seriously, how did you get through medical school?
