Brilliant... and good for Obnerians, I mean he deconstructs Radiohead for godsakes

But I wouldn't put straight jazz like this on an Obner top twenty list

the only thing more lame than calling out people's year end lists for being unoriginal is being upset for being called out as such

Goddamn it.

I forgot about Brad Mehldau too. Definitely list-worthy to me.

Oh, poster's remorse!

That I don't get. Is your list your twenty favorite albums of the year, or your twenty favorite albums of the year that would be discussed on this board by other members?

I put anything and everything on my list, whether it's a live album or whether it's something like Cars Can Be Blue that I know nobody on here is acquainted with.

It's all pretty arbitrary... but I listen and judge critically to pop, rock and world music-pop in one way (dialogic zeitgeist shit), I listen to jazz in different way (pushing the limits), and I listen to classical in a totally different way (historical and cerebral). It would make no sense to me to "rate" Brad Mehldau in relation to Califone. Really has to do more with my aesthetic toilet training than who this board is.

I suppose. I'd just be interested in being exposed to more jazz and any classical rather than read another list of TV On The Radio, Dylan, and the Decemberists.

Amazing how taking my comments totally out of context makes them seem so wrong. I'll bet you were really proud of yourself for that one.

Yeah, umm... just not as proud as this:

"I certainly don't want to fall into the trap of making it look like I think my list is some kind of revolutionary, radical departure from everyone else's. It is, however, the best list on the board. Or at least it will be once I post it."

I noticed that there's lots of diversity within the "indie" singer-songwriter genre but few picks within the blues/jazz/classical

This is probably not just a result that the board is indie rock skewed, but also that these genres all are far past their creative peaks. I'm not a big fan of classical music so I won't comment on it but there are thousands of jazz cds I would buy from the 50's, 60's and 70's before I'd consider getting a recent jazz album. Similarly would target blues from the first half of the 20th century before I paid any attention to recent releases.

Yes... which is my "zeitgeist" point about pop/indie/alt/rock music... it's interest is still to "capture" a feeling of "now"... while both classical (or serious compositional) and jazz sit in an historical context... I am still catching up with Clifford Brown, Art Pepper, Bill Evans, Sonny Rollins... on and on. I am impelled to listen Freddie Hubbard from 1968 in a much different way than say Arthur Lee and Love from 1968.

Again this is not a weakness of pop music (it has a shelf-life, it is throwaway, it is not serious), rather it is its strength and appeal (it is a barometer for the contemporary cultural climate).

Amen. But it is a "steakhouse" so I prepare myself before even walking in.

mayor, any chance i can get a quick riyl of the bill frisell album?

This is a bit of a return to form for him from his past few albums - still his Americana-style stuff, but more straight-ahead jazz because of the company he's keeping and the material they're choosing (especially since Paul Motian is involved - it's very much in his realm, really, but with Frisell's twang more present than usual on their Trio dates.) Way more successful than the slightly disappointing outing with Elvin Jones and Dave Holland. (There's also a cool little 4-song EP of session outtakes available for download on his site that steers a little closer to typical Frisell style.)

I bet when you go home at night you dress yourself in lingerie and lay down on your empty love seat imagining The Doobie Brothers stroking you off.

Keep in mind South Pacific is like 11, so anyone over 32 is elderly.
