Hey all,

So this x-mas I got my old turntable and albums back from my parents who have had it tucked away in storage for at least 7 years.

Here is the deal. I have re-decided that I love vinyl much more than anything else, but do not nessesarily want to track down and pay high prices for new releases on vinyl. Thus I have decided that I will only buy vinyl to round out my collection with older music that I want. So the plan is to buy albums pre-1990 on vinyl (used).

My questions:
What should I round out the collection with?
Do you think it will be hard to find what I want?

Here is what I currently have on the list so far:
- REM (all of the IRS years)
- Replacements (anything)
- Pixies (Surfer Rosa and Doolittle)
- Beach Boys (Pet Sounds)
- VU (anything)

so, do you not want to pay high prices for vinyl or only for new releases? i own everything on your current list (except white light/white heat, and those reissues are everywhere) and only pet sounds cost me more than i wanted to pay for it.

taking an interest in vinyl collecting is not about having a solid list. it's about digging for buried treasures everywhere - flea markets, garage sales, salvation armies, record stores, etc. if you limit yourself to a paltry list, you will pass so much gold that it's not even really worthwhile to consider yourself a record collector.

I don't consider myself a music "collector"...I just want to get things on vinyl that I like. In this sense it is about getting music in a form for which it was originally intended (the pixies may or may not fall into this category).
Naturally there are the no-brainers like Dylan, the Beatles, Stones, etc (of which I am already well stocked). But am looking for ideas and artists that i might keep an eye out for. Keeping in mind that I do not really want to pay new prices if I don't have to.

In other words, what would be some good used vinyl treasures?

Thanks

Mark

I picked up Pet Sounds for a buck at a thrift store. It's a nice copy, too.

Generally, the best combo of price & quality I've found is a local antique mall. It has junk from diffferent dealers, but it's all under one roof with one cashier. There are several vendors that sell vinyl. Most of it is in really good shape (I'm not a collector, but I don't want to waste my time on something warped or scratched all to hell), and there is one vendor who runs 2-for-1 or half price sales fairly frequently.

I generally just dig and see what I can find. If it's cheap, I'll buy lots of things I'd never buy on cd, just to try it out.

I like to pick up old Blue Note jazz LPs from the 50s and 60s whenever I go to used stores and can find them on the cheap. Some of that shit gets pricey. But the cover art rocks.

Have you guys had pretty good luck with ordering vinyl online in terms of its condition when it arrives to you?

I recently pre-ordered some sort of limited edition vinyl of Boys and Girls in America, but thats the first time I've ever bought vinyl online.

Never had any problems at all. Most people seem to package the lps properly in my experience.

Thrift shop stores never disappoint for finding good vinyl.
