Nomo - "Nu Tones"

And yeah, I know that those of you who are really into Electronica, seem to hate the term "Electronica". But I've never really been into it, so I have nothing better to use. Can't even come up with a good RIYL.

But this is nice and dancy and catchy.
Sent to me by an old friend.

And I know nothing about them, except that their album is apparently called Nu Tones, as well.

I picture you pointing to the screen, as you count each letter.

Perhaps, but her reply also had a certain simplicity that made it the perfect punctuation for this little spat.

THIS IS NOT ELECTRONIC MUSIC!

I tried pimping this band earlier last year, but nobody gave a shit. And now Todd's probably sealed their fate.

Anyway, this band is AFROBEAT, and their sound is pretty organic (made mostly with, you know, instruments). So that means they sound like Fela Kuti without the the vocals and with track times trimmed down to around 3-5 mins each rather than the sprawling 10+ min Fela jams. Very funky and catchy in places.

So please do check them out, misnomers aside. A very good band that deserves more attention.

I told you I didn't know shit.
And I did a search for these guys and came up with nothing. Glad that somebody else knows something.

Is the rest of the album this good?

So you've heard one song of theirs and you feel like you can recommend them? Hmmm.

I didn't download the song (nothing against you Todd, I never download things people post here for some reason), but now that Drinky pointed out that they're Afrobeat, I realize I heard this album earlier this year. Enjoyed it too.

I thought he was recommending the song he heard. Makes sense to me.

It's a pretty uniformly solid album, IMO. They even do a "cover" of a Joanna Newsom song that manages to blend in perfectly with the rest of the album.

I guess there may be a few high and low points, but I honestly haven't listened to it in a while so I don't really remember which ones are which. I'm gonna be revisiting soon to finalize my '06 list, and the only reason I haven't kept listening to it all year is that I had to set it aside to make room for all of the new stuff I kept getting.

It's been hovering just outside of my top 20, but it may end up in my final list when I submit it for the shmoo poll.

That is correct.
Just sharing a tune that I like, Chris.

So here's the Joanna Newsom cover which is barely recognizable as the same song. There are no vocals, and NOMO mainly just builds off of the basic melody and takes the song in an entirely different direction.

NOMO - "The Book of Right On"

This isn't really one of my favorite tracks on the album, but it seems to me like something that might get people's attention. I'll upload one of my favorites in a minute.

This is good stuff. I dig the horn section. Thanks for the introduction.

If you guys like this danceable, African-influenced stuff be sure to check out Toubab Krewe. They aren't as jazzy, but put on an incredible live show and their studio album's not half bad either. From what I understand, they are a bunch of kids from N. Carolina who spent some time in Mali learning from African musicians.

Here's a little blurb about them on NPR:
