I really like the song The Rat. Does this ensure I'll like the rest of it?

Thanques,

fp

Yes, get it. The Rat is a rarity on the album. That's not to say the album sucks. It was my No. 2 of the year. The songs, if you give them a chance, will haunt you forever in a good way.

The Rat is definitely the best tune (yes, that's right, I called it a tune) on the disc. I think the rest of the disc is just decent. It's more interesting than good. I haven't had them haunt me in any way.

The Rat is NOT indicative of the entire album, but I agree with OPA! This album stays with you. I fucking love it. Read my blurb in the Shmoo poll. The Rat is a very dark song, just gussied up with all that wonderful guitar noise. The rest of the album is just as dark, but not as rockin.

If you can get it on the cheap, but don't drop more than $10 on it. It's nice and the other songs aren't that far removed from "The Rat" but none match it for overall qual.

I never got why it was so frothed over, but I'm pretty dense like that.

It took me a looooong time to warm up the The Rat (I think I'm the only person on the planet who can say this) and thus, a long time to actually buy the album. It's not as good as Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me is Gone, in my opinion, but worth owning.

I got it off a comp- I hate when they do that. They did the same thing w/ Kaki King, putting the rockin'est song out to promote it. Then you get it home, and the rest of the disc is melllllowww.... bummer, man...

Yeah, it's a good album. I think it's held up pretty well. I like a handful of songs on it more than "The Rat".

No. I like "The Rat" but the I think the rest of the album is pretty mediocre. As always, YMMV.

I like "The Rat" a lot, but the rest of the album was a disappointment.

Don't bother. The Rat was the only song that kept me coming back.

I might have done that to you....sorry

Yeah, the Rat is the most rockin' song on there. The rest is pretty good, but more laid back.

If you want to own the best album from 2004, yes.

as good as "The Rat" may be, there's probably at least 6 songs on it that kill it.

not a bad album at all.

"The Rat" and "138th St." are the only two songs on that record that did anything for me. The rest is dreary organ doo doo.

I find that description of it appealing actually.

Oh yes, it's dreary, it's gloomy and it hurts. In such a good way. This definitely came out at the right time for me and just clicked in so many ways with what was going on in my life, but even listening to all of the stronger songs today I find what it was that enchanted me so much about this- it's really honest and raw and connects with you in an almost abstract way at times, but for as abstract as it may be it's easy to understand.

Short answer? Hit that shit.

and a very good one, at that. and I don't really get people calling it dreary, either, but what do i know?

the rest of the songs don't have the angsty energy of the Rat, but they rock in other ways. worth checking out, at least.

The rest is boring. Just download 'The Rat' or whatever.

love the album, great for winter. i like the dreary organs and caterwauling. the drumming, too, really ties the disc together for me. it's definitely something i have to be in the mood for though.
