While I'm not a huge fan of either, I do prefer Queen over the Beatles.

And I'd place the Stones higher than any of those other four, but they've always seemed more American than British in terms of attitude, style, etc.

I've never even heard of Take That before.

I know quite a few people who would take Flash Gordon over Yellow Submarine.

Well, I would, but that has only a little bit to do with the soundtrack. Yellow Submarine is hard to watch.

I'd say they're both about even for me. I like the Stones better than both of them though.

I think they both had a tremendous sense of the comically theatric and never took themselves too seriously even when some fans did.

They both have deep, diverse catalogs and both have been wrongfully dismissed by countless people who only know parts of those catalogs and rightfully dismissed by a few who do know their catalogs but don't find their references to pre-War Music Hall camp very amusing. Strangely enough some of those same detractors seem to defend Sparks, who are fueled by similar influences.

But Freddie would throw a high heeled boot at you if he were still alive and say there's no way Queen are better than The Beatles.

Yep, end of discussion.

Having said that... another heresy: I like Brian May's guitar sound and playing better than any guitars on Beatles' recordings. Everyone always thinks glittery Freddie, but May's guitar was unique and powerful.

Yep. Every time I hear "We Will Rock You" I think how fucking sick of that song I am, until the guitar solo at the end and I remember how awesome it is.

Speaking of Queen...has there been a thread about Depp playing Mercury in an upcoming biopic?

His guitar on every song is, well... can I use the term "miraculous"?
The technique.
The melody.
The TONE.

Unfuckwithable.

And one of the unjustly overlooked names when discussing "greatest" rock guitarists.

That said, without The Beatles, there would be no Queen.

I know quite a few of said Brits, acutally. They're wrong about this, of course, but they mean well.

Just to put this poll into context BBC Radio 2 is the most boring, conservative, middle of the road, 'grown up' channel on UK radio, and as we all know the best Beatles tracks were the off-their-tits-on-drugs-with-wizard-hats-on ones like Rain and Tomorrow Never Knows.

I would however, like to make two points.

The Beatles status as 'greatest band ever' was virtually unchallenged for decades but since John Lennon was murdered virtually two new generations of music fans have been born. The Beatles simply do not have the same currency today as they did to people born in the 50's, 60's and 70's. I'm sure at last count about 50% of Obner 'hated' The Beatles. Personally I think these people are mad but I don't think it's a particularily British view more a generational one. Just like if you played a Fats Domino, Louie Armstrong or Link Wray record most people wouldn't like it because they are too dumb to understand anything outside their own 'modern' context. Such is The Beatles fate as we head into towards the 2010's.

As for Queen they were just another semi forgotten 1970's rock act until they played Live Aid. Their entire legacy has it's foundations (and about 75% of the masonry) on that one performance. Conclusion if you can blow Paul Young and Kenny Loggins off the stage in front of (probably) the biggest viewership a concert has ever had you have a pretty good chance of being remembered as 'The Greatest Band Ever'. The rest of the blame can be aportioned to Wayne's World.

They remained big with American classic rock fans even when they were semi-forgotten on their home turf.

Plus there were the Highlander movies/TV themes and songs that got a lot of exposure in the 90's.

And Freddie's death canonized him as rock deaths often do.

Still, I love at least two dozens of their songs, nearly none of which are their hits.
