Violent Femmes - Hallowed Ground

My favorite of theirs for ages has been 3. Only had Hallowed Ground on cassette and rarely played it in recent years.

Just got it on CD and frig if it's not far angrier, raw and unsettling than I remember it.

What I'd remembered as smarminess is actually a railing for and against Gano's religious childhood.

Great rekkid.

I know a few of the songs off the album from the GH collection cd I have. Sounds fairly interesting. I saw Gano and co. in college when they played on campus and they rocked my ass off. Turned into a big dance party. I've always enjoyed their debut as well. I should check out more of their catalog.

Hallowed Ground is a criminally overlooked record in my opinion.

After the debut got them a crapload of fans, this record went on to alienate dman near all of them. It was just way too dark for all the people who just wanted to get drunk and sing along to little ditties about wanting to get laid.

I still like the debut, but I play Hllowed Ground much more at this point.

U2: War really struck me for just what an amazing album it is when I played it for the first time in years not long ago. Same with Love & Rockets: Express.

OK...leaving the 80s nostalgia bus now...

I pulled out this Harry Pussy record to dump onto my ipod, and its rocking me. I haven't listened to it probably in at least 5-6 years. It's back in my rotation for sure.

Others:

Devo--Once again I was importing things into the 'pod and decided they would be a nice addition. All those great covers...Secret Agent Man, Satisfaction. Not to mention arguably their best songs Gates of Steel, and Freedom of Choice.

Tom Petty--I got my friend a Tom Petty interview book for xmas. He used to be smitten with the man. I was always more of a casual listener but enjoyed his stuff. Was listening to Full Moon Fever...damn. Such great material. Amazing songwriting. Proves how criminally overlooked he is.

The one exception to the Clapton that I mentioned in the "Once Loved" thread:

Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs

After a period of declining interest that began in 1990, I pretty much gave up on everything Clapton about 1992 or so. Recently I put on the above-mentioned album and remembered why I liked the guy so much in the first place.

Still a great, passionate, epic record. And I'm glad that I put it back on.
