i used Quark for about 10 years and knew there were ilogical things about it but assumed that was just the was it was and accepted it. But once i switched to InDesign almost every single thing i complained about was fixed, and on top of that 100's of things that never occored to me were fixed. Every aspect of the interface is easier to use. Most tasks remove 5 or 6 steps.

So now that i have to work on someone elses Quark file all weekend i'm going nuts.

aahhhh...i see your frustration.
you make a pretty good case for at least trying indesign on a few things. maybe i'll run through the tutorial on lynda.com.

oh, are the indesign advantages you speak of more design or production oriented?

i'm not entirely sure what you mean by this, but i assume both.

(i've always done my own design and production and don't really know when one becomes the other)

i've probably done about 15% of my own production work over the past 12 years. now i have to step that up to around 75% until i hire someone in april. hence i find myself needing some advanced photoshop help.

i've learned so much about all the programs by working with 23 year olds the last few months.

funny how that works.

i have two positions to fill this spring and you better believe they will be young and technically minded as well as good designers.

its more like quark suckspress

it took me one workday to figure out how to do everything i did in quark with indesign instead... and then they throw a ton of extra adobe compatibility that i love... haven't really had the desire to open quark in two years... deleted it off my computer

i think you could stay with quark ...maybe for two more years... if you really wanted to...

but if you're hiring new designers, personally i'd be irritated having to work with software that wasn't sticking around

the compatibility is so great.

In Quark if you pull an illustrator EPS it's HEAVILY pixilated
in InDesign it's not only crystal clear, if you want you can paste it so that IT'S EDITABLE.

and to add insult to injury, Quark is 3 times as expensive as InDesign.
