i've heard nocturama and no more shall we part, and liked about about half of each

does it get better, should i give up? is there an album that most agree on being his/their best?

Those are not the places to start.

Start with much earlier albums, and the latest double album.

Be aware the latest has horrible sound quality. I took mine back- couldn't stand to listen to it.

No problems with sound quality on my CD. Maybe you got a mistake pressing or something.

These all trounce both of those. The two you've heard are the weakest ones, I think.

1984...From Her To Eternity
1985... The Firstborn Is Dead
1986... Kicking Against the Pricks.
1986.. Your Funeral, My Trial
1988... Tender Prey
1990... The Good Son

Murder Ballads is pretty good, too. Don't have a couple of the early 90's ones.

Depends on what sides of Nick Cave you prefer. The schmaltzy balladeer influenced by Leonard Cohen and Brazilian crooners, the drug-crazed psychobilly rocker (recommend The Birthday Party) or the angst-ridden poet overflowing with biblical dread (his meat and potatoes middle period).

I like them all, though half of Nocturama is indeed weak, and I don't often listen to his piano ballad stuff. Favorites in rough order:

Your Funeral, My Trial 86
Tender Prey 88
Let Love In 94
Kicking Against the Pricks 86
Murder Ballads 96
From Her to Eternity 84
Abbatoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus 04
Henry's Dream 92

Don't start with the 04 album, it's a bit overwhelming if you're just dipping your toe in. I'd say Tender Prey is his most diverse and probably the easiest entrypoint for most.

And if you like The Cramps, Gun Club and Stooges, and don't mind the piercing, rough production, Birthday Party stuff is classic. Their last release that combines two EPs is the closest to Nick Cave's early solo work.

I don't know Nick's solo stuff much outside of the "hits" and some random cuts here and there and maybe an album or two (and nothing really thrills me). But I love the Birthday Party...so that's my recc. And I don't know where you should start really, but their greatest hits collection (ugh) is actually really good.

The best are probably Let Love In, Your Funeral... My Trial, and From Her to Eternity. The Boatman's Call and The Good Son are two of the best also, and Kicking Against the Pricks and Murder Ballads are just as good.. You have his two worst albums (though I do like parts of No More Shall We part quite a bit).

If you decide to go the compilation route, I would probably buy Live Seeds before I bought the best of.

His most recent is quite popular.

listen to From Her to Eternity, definitely Let Love In, and Tender Prey, and then re-judge...

Don't know if it matters to you or not, but "Kicking Against The Pricks" is a covers album. It's still solid, but then again, I give high marks to everyone who does an Alex Harvey cover.

Birthday Party Live 1981-82

It's all I have, save for a Nick Cave/Bad Seeds Greatest Hits I bought in '96, on the heel of getting the X-Files (television) soundtrack. (Nick Cave was featured on the second as well.)

But, of the two, the BP live album shines better. Much more friendly to my warped pretentions.

Yup.

* Just so you know, I am not pushing Amazon on anyone. I didn't get my copy there. Bought it at Madrid Rock in February '00, or thereabout.

I only have "Nocturama", "Murder Ballads", the newer 2 disk, and the Greatest hits for Solo, and only Greatest hits for BParty...

I like them all just fine, INCLUDING Nocturama... There's too much poo-pooing of it so far on this thread to not offer up some support of it...
