Red and I were having a discussion the other day about how much of the music you own you could identify and figured we'd bring it to the board.

Let's say your collection was played for you randomly. What percentage of songs do you think you could name? Would you know the artists, even if you couldn't name the songs? How many do you think you could sing along with and know nearly every word?

I initially thought I'd be able to identify maybe 75% of song titles and nearly every artist. Then I had iTunes on shuffle and realized there was no way it was even close to that. I have so many songs by obscure bands that I got from mp3 blogs and/or compilations. It was pretty humbling. I was even having trouble with song names on albums I love. So I'm thinking it's closer to maybe 30-40% of song titles and perhaps 70% when it comes to just naming bands.

Bonus for people in bands: How many of your own songs could you name?

i'd also guess 75% but might also come to the same outcome conclusion you did. i have 28000+ songs on mp3 and i'm sure there's a bunch on V/A and obscure (by my standards) stuff that i'd be stumped a lot too. maybe i'll try this out later today.

I'd say 80% of the music in my collection.

And 100% of my own tunes... easy. Even the old stuff that I haven't played/heard in 15 years.

I wouldn't count stuff I've just got on mp3. I've got a ton of stuff digitally that I've never listened to or only listened to once. If I put my entire iTunes on shuffle, and hit play, chances are I might not recognize what comes up. I should try it (I never do).

As far as my physical record collection, I'd hope I could name 90% of the artists upon listening, but probably only like 40% of the songs. Maybe less than that.

i do that music quiz thing on my ipod from time to time and i ace it every time

but still, i'm sure there would be about 10-15% that I may not recognize.

I had it on shuffle the other day and I was pretty terrible. 70% of I could name the band. 20% song titles though.

5% song titles
90% artists
75% could sing along to

this just reminds me of listening to girl talk and the frustration that i felt when i was like "ooh ooh!! i know this song!" and then not getting it even after you paused it and gave hints.

I used to play a driving game in the car with my buddy. We'd set the radio on scan, and as a song would pop up, we'd race to guess the artist, song, and album. He'd kick my ass on country stations, but I would rule elsewhere.

i've got something like a couple of months of music on my itunes, so logically i don't think that i could identify the song titles a majority of the time, though I'd hope to be able to place the artist 75% of the time...

Song titles and lyrics, rarely, and who cares since I don't pay attention to those most of the time anyway. Artists I'd say 80%.

iPod has this as a game built into it
it plays a song
and then lists 4 random song names (one of them is the real song)
and you have to pick it within a few seconds

i was kind of surprised how good i was
(but the names are right in front of me)

I could name 45-60% of the song titles, atleast 80% of the artists and probably sing along with about 25-40% of the songs and actually have most of the lyrics right.

I'm terrible at song titles, especially ambiguous ones. I honestly don't care.

But I could nail the sound to artist and album really easily probably 90% of the time.

I also used to be able to attach where I got a certain CD and a story surrounding its purchase to all my records - "Saturday night five years ago at Shake It Records. I was also kinda drunk."

Not so in the age of downloads by the bucket.

I'm rubbish at remembering song titles for some reason. I'm pretty good at remembering album titles and being able to identify them visually pretty quickly.

I've no idea what my percentages would be but I'd guess fairly high in remembering the band when I hear the music.

I miss this. I can still remember shit like holding the longbox to XTC's "Skylarking" and wondering if I should get it when I was 17 years-old. Tracks in Indianapolis.

Sigh.

About the same for me. Mine might be something around 75% for song titles and that would be pretty much just for instumental stuff I have, like say, the new Tape album.

I'd say possibly 99% for artists and 95% could sing along to.

I don't download a lot and am pretty choosey about buying things. If I like it I pretty much listen to it repeatedly and learn all the lyrics, etc.

If it was just cd's that I physically own:

98% Name the artist
75% Name the song
40% Be able to sing along with part of the song

If it was the mp3's I've downloaded:
15% Artist
10% Song
5% Sing along
