Um... maybe you should actually look at the classes first before coming to that conclusion. This is a good class, certainly one of the better recent ones, but better than the first few years of the Hall? No way.

Are they limited to five every year or something?

What happens if you miss your first go at it? Do you have to wait for a lame year to get in? Or are you just jilted?

yeah, that's a nice class. r.e.m. was a no-brainer.

i feel like grandmaster flash & furious five and the ronettes are getting in on some very good and maybe even great but short-lived careers that are highlighted by one extraordinary single each. (call it the percy sledge effect.)

interesting to see that both david lee roth and sammy hagar are going in with van halen. that'll be an interesting performance at the ceremony.

This is going to be an interesting ceremony

Does DLR duet with REM???

Does EVH play guitar for Be My Baby

where do gary cherone, sammy hagar, and michael anthony have to sit?

Does REM go the boring route and do E-bow the letter with Patti Smith?

interesting section from wikipedia's rock and roll hall of fame entry:

Quote:
The main criticism is that the induction process is controlled by a few individuals, such as founder Jann Wenner, former foundation director Suzan Evans, and writer Dave Marsh, reflecting their tastes rather than the views of the rock world as a whole. A former member of the nominations board once said:

At one point Suzan Evans lamented the choices being made because there weren't enough big names that would sell tickets to the dinner. That was quickly remedied by dropping one of the doo-wop groups being considered in favor of a 'name' artist ... I saw how certain pioneering artists of the 50s and early 60s were shunned because there needed to be more name power on the list, resulting in 70s superstars getting in before the people who made it possible for them. Some of those pioneers still aren't in today — but Queen is.[1]
Petitions with tens of thousands of signatures were also being ignored and some groups that were signed with certain labels or companies or were affiliated with various committee members have even been put up for nomination with no discussion at all.[1]

There are also very few progressive rock, hard rock or heavy metal bands in the hall. To date, the only progressive rock band inducted was Pink Floyd in 1996; the only hard rock bands that have been inducted are Led Zeppelin in 1995, Aerosmith and Queen in 2001, AC/DC in 2003, Black Sabbath in 2006, and Van Halen in 2007.

After the 2007 nominations were announced, it was immediately noticed that there were only 9 nominees. Up until that year, the fewest nominees there had ever been in one year was 13. The Rock Hall also officially announced that 5 of those 9 would be inducted. This has led to the belief that the low number of nominees is due to the nominations committee trying to muscle the voters into inducting a few certain candidates.

A really good class and big ups to the Hall for rightly shutting out the Stooges.

Patti Smith is bad enough.

Maybe you should be a little more sanctimonious.

I think they always do that. Peter Green and Lindsey Buckingham, etc.

No arguements with any of the choices.
Nice.

This alone makes the Hall a joke worthy of Sinbad.

What the fuck is Sammy doing there? What year did he come on?

If I recall, the E-Street Band wasn't allowed in when Bruce was inducted because they weren't labeled on the sleeves. I thought they were sticklers.

REM should take the opportunity to not suck so much.

Does wiki have a list of acts who are available for induction but haven't got in, or at least a list of the biggest of those names?

My dad's pissed that Steppenwolf haven't even been nominated as he deems 'Born To Be Wild' and 'Magic Carpet Ride' grounds for admission. Also, to quote him, "They invented the phrase 'heavy metal'!"

So you want a list of every act to put out an album before 1982, minus a few? Good luck finding one.

Or if we want a list of the biggest, then should wiki start it's own rock hall of near-fame to determine who is the biggest that didn't get in?

This article mentions Chic, the Dave Clarke Five, the Stooges, and Joe Tex as nominees who didn't make it this year.

Found one:
http://www.futurerockhall.com/eligibles.php

Wow. A lot of surprises. People who have been available for many years.

Cat Stevens, Leonard Cohen, Alice Cooper, Nick Drake, and Meat Loaf alone have been up for induction for ten years.

Next year:

Metallica, Beastie Boys, Madonna, and Sonic Youth all come up.

Only because I wished you good luck. If I hadn't, you never would've found it.
