I just posted this on the austin craigslist. you think it will work?

Bassist available, new to town after three years of mostly woodshedding (while working on my Master’s degree). 27 years old, with fourteen years bass guitar experience, and twenty years musical experience—all but three of which have been spent in bands (okay, I admit that a significant number of those were school related). I enjoy playing live, recording (studio or home), and being exposed to good art and good people. Demos available upon request. It’s time for me to get back in the game. I’m primarily a bassist, but also enjoy hand percussion, especially folkloric (Afro-Cuban).

Genres I’m interested in playing include folk, “freak-folk” (whatever that means), “lo-fi” (ditto), old grimy blues, funk, afro-cuban, hip-hop, blah blah blah (you know, toss it under the rubric of indie, blend as many genres as possible, and I’ll probably be happy enough, I think). I just moved back from Oregon, so no jam-band wankery right now, please!

Obligatory list of extremely random but important influences:

!!!, Afro Cuban All Stars, A Silver Mt. Zion, The Black Keys, Bob Wills/Texas swing, Calexico, Neko Case, Death From Above 1979, The Decemberists, Drive-By Truckers, Bob Dylan, Fela Kuti (and honky devotees like Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra), The Fiery Furnaces, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mississippi John Hurt, Iron & Wine, The J.B.s, Lightning Bolt, The Microphones, MMW, Mr. Lif, Pavement, Public Enemy, The Silver Jews, Six Organs of Admittance, Sufjan Stevens, Sun Ra, Wilco

Local: Knife in the Water, Okkervil River, Shearwater, explosions in the sky, the scabs, … trail of dead, asylum street spankers, spoon, and the legions of great singer-songwriters who went before all this new-fangled stuff.

For your steely-eyed perusal, my top 20 list of 2004 albums was:

1. The Drive-By Truckers - The Dirty South
2. Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days
3. The Black Keys - Rubber Factory
4. Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra - Who Is This America?
5. Death From Above 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm A Machine
6. The Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat
7. Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans
8. Dangermouse - The Grey Album
9. The Earlies - These Were The Earlies
10. Devendra Banhart - Rejoicing in the hands
11. Wilco - A Ghost is Born
12. Animal Collective - Sung Tongs
13. Neko Case - The Tigers Have Spoken
14. !!! - Louden Up Now
15. The Polyphonic Spree - Together We're Heavy
16. cLOUDDEAD - ten
17. Madvillain - Madvillainy
18. RJD2 - Since last we spoke
19. Kanye West - The College Dropout
20. Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

I have eclectic listening interests, and eclectic playing interests. I can read music (bass clef is my stronger suit, but I can transpose if necessary). I do have real books for the occasional (hopefully not schmaltzy) straight-up jazz gig, but this isn’t my primary interest. If I sound promising, and you want to practice two or three times a week and gig no less than once every fortnight, we should get together. In addition to the above, I brew my own beer – drop me a line and we can discuss interests over one of them.

Thanks,

Colin

No, I don't think that will interest any single women. It doesn't even say what you look like.

But really, I'd let you be in my band.

think that your ad should be very attractive to any folk-leaning band looking for a bassist. Are you worried at all about being too attractive? Are there more "bassist seeking band" ads or "bands seeking bassist" ads on craigslist? If I were looking for a band, my first move would be to look for the latter kind of ad so I could keep the ball in my court as much as possible. But I'm sort of a wuss.

Looks good to me man. Hell, I'd play with you.

.....and by play I mean get completely shitfaced and demand that we only play "Don't Fear the Reaper" at all times.

I'd be scared that the guys in my band (of which I don't currently have) would see that ad and fire me; shit man, YOU CAN READ THE BASS CLEF!

Fucking nerdy musician/bassists; You and Phil and your talent. Bass playin is all about looks, and big ol' loud amps.

Perused The Chronicle lately? I always found it to be a reliable resource. You can place ads pretty cheap in the 'Seeking Musicians' section, too. Of course, I'd recommend you post something a bit pithier. One glaring omission: no mention of County Line BBQ in your ad. That's just sad.

But if I add County Line BBQ, I'll have to add Tamale House breakfast tacos, and that's just silly. Yeah, if I don't get any bites in a week, i'll trim my initial post down considerably in length.

Bloor: I still can't touch Phil - he is the once and future Dorkestra Teacher, after all.

personally, i'd keep the top 20 out. its a long ad and it seems superfluous. i'd spend more energy on defining those terms ("freak folk") which you chose not to define and describe the kind of bands you've been in before.

You might want to mention your predilection for Krylon huffing. I mean with that, and the beer, who cares what you can or can't play?

If I lived in Austin, I would create a band just to play with someone who promised some homebrew.

It's not a game, it's our new single on Dirty Sanchez Records.

yeah chuck D, you might get some players who have ulterior (i think that's the word) motives.

I saw a sweet five-string at the pawn shop the other day. Had a nice "lived-in" look.

Craigslist is active in a lot of cities. Definitely Chicago and New York.
