154. Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West (1997)

Image

This album includes the first songs I ever heard by Modest Mouse, is my personal favorite by them, and seems to be pretty universally everyone's favorite by them.

MM are the biggest band that I discovered through CMJ's Top 1000 thread. And that thread coming up on a Yahoo search was my entry into what would become the world of obner.

'Doin' The Cockroach', 'Trailer Trash' and 'Bankrupt On Selling' were the first three songs I heard by the band and those last two are still my two favorite tracks off this album. But the entire thing is ridiculously good, of course. This is the album where they managed to encapsulate all of their sounds and really make a solid discovery point for the band, though nothing on here comes close to being as poppy as 'Float On' or 'Dashboard'.

NEHHH!

my favorite still is "moon & antarctica" their peak as a band both musically and lyrically, weaving a loosely-conceptual album of isolation and desolation.

155. B'ehl - Only A Paper Moon (1997)

Image

B'ehl were a lo-fi pop band from Winnipeg, Manitoba. They are now known as Paper Moon.

While they are a Canadian indie pop band with female vocals, they share more in common with Cub than Stars. The tracks on this, their first album, are quite lo-fi and sometimes amateurish but always fun and catchy and twee.

Opening track 'Tag' is probably my personal favorite off the disc, though the whole thing doesn't really have any faults. Clocking in at just over half an hour, it's short and sweet and highly recommended to any twee or pop fan.

156. Air - Moon Safari (1998)

Image

I believe I first discovered Air through the Virgin Suicides film. This is one of the rare electronica-y albums in my collection, though it's more lounge than electronica, really.

My favorites are still the tracks with vocals. 'You Make It Easy' in particular, though 'Kelly Watch The Stars' and 'Sexy Boy' are good too. I think I still prefer Talkie Walkie but I'm not getting rid of this one.

I'm the opposite; I prefer the songs without vocals which is why I love that Premiers Symptomes album so much.

Edit: Great album though and one of the few Electronica albums I own as well.

157. Mary Lou Lord - Got No Shadow (1998)

[img][300:300]http://tulipa.phoenixware.net/0107/12.jpg[/img]

I don't remember how I first discovered Mary Lou Lord. It may have been through the Nirvana connection. But then again, maybe it wasn't. I didn't discover Daniel Johnston through them, though I did with the Vaselines. So I don't know.

Either way, the fact that I did is all that matters. I am a huge fan now and this album would make a top fifteen list of mine, for sure. I love every track off this and every time I listen to it, I think of a different person who I think should like this and make a note to include something on the next mixtape for them.

Her covers of the Bevis Frond and Elizabeth Cotten are better than the originals and her originals are just as good.

158. Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (1998)

Image

When I first discovered the genre of indie rock, I did what I do with a lot of things I become interested in -- I took the nerdiest way possible to find out more. In short, I went on Yahoo and searched for "top indie rock" or "top 100 indie rock" or "most important indie albums" and so on. Thus, I found a thread on a message board claiming to include the "top 1000 indie rock songs of all time". Bingo, I thought. This was just what I was looking for. So I went through the whole thread, page by page, and made a Word document listing every song they had listed. Then I downloaded them all.

Neutral Milk Hotel was one of the biggest discoveries. And when, later on, I would constantly see My Bloody Valentine's Loveless and this album fighting for the number one spots on lists of top indie albums of all time, I agreed. MBV took me a while to get into but this one hit me immediately with the downloads of "The King Of Carrot Flowers" and "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea".

I bought it and became hooked and it's definitely one of my favorites in my collection. Everything from the energy of "The King Of Carrot Flowers, Pt. 3" to the lyrics of "Communist Daughter" I love.

Granted, there are things I find fault with now. Not releasing anything afterward seems like a ploy on Mangum's part to emulate Brian Wilson. Not having a tracklisting on your back cover has always been something that pisses me off. Something that Conor Oberst is hugely guilty of.

But besides that, the music itself is still really all that matters and there's no faults anywhere in that.

Agreed this is my fave MM by far. Something about this album gets me. One of my top albums of all time probably.

065. Smashing Pumpkins - Gish (1991)

So I like the Smashing Pumpkins alright. I own all their albums and have all their b-sides downloaded. But I still feel like I don't love them enough, or there's something I'm missing. Something that just needs to click for me to go from being a fan to being an obsessive worshipper. Because everyone else I know is. My friends drove to Chicago for the last two shows before the break-up. My friends went looking for Corgan's house when they were in Chicago for Lollapalooza last year. My friends dressed like Darcy in high school and owned multiple copies of the infamous Zero shirt.

So I feel like I'm missing something when I say I just like them.

This album I especially just like. 'Siva' And 'Rhinoceros' are the only tracks on here that really do anything for me. But I've never been a big fan of this album. I bought it years after hearing the MCIS and Adore singles. If I had heard this album first, I probably wouldn't have vested any interest into the group. So I'm glad I didn't. But yeah, this album is not one I play a lot. And this latest spin hasn't really convinced me otherwise.

i just think this album is the shit. there are so many tunes on this that still rock and i still sing at high volume...plus it takes me back to those middle high school years... a classic.

I've got a confession to make. I hadn't heard this album until I downloaded the Jay-Z mash-up with it. I was familiar with, I think, 'Summer Babe' but that was probably it.

I had originally downloaded the Jay-Z/Weezer mash-up, I believe, because I was interested to hear how someone would put together The Blue Album and The Black Album. When I heard about the Pavement one, I downloaded it for the same reason -- curiosity. The Pavement one was much better produced and really quite good. And the end result was me buying both Slanted and the Black Album.

Sometimes when I listen to this, I still hear the Jay-Z version first when the song starts. Despite having listened to this many, many times since buying it.

This really is a tremendous, unique album though. Where a lot of indieish stuff is often too out-there for casual rock listeners to get into, this is so borderline that I've found it fairly easy to turn quite a few of my friends onto this. Friends who didn't listen to much rock past Nirvana, Soundgarden, and other alt-rock/grunge bands. I played this album for them and they fell for it. Bands like this and Sonic Youth can really help me build a bridge, which is good.

another utterly classic album....i feel bad for you that jay-z somehow has gotten mixed up with this...ugh. this album is pure indie rock goodness.

The first, and curretly only, Dinosaur Jr. record I owned. Used to be the only record by them I liked too, but I've just started to appreciate their early albums recently.

This is another album that I never want to listen to but, when I put it on, remember how much it rocks. Around the middle-end of the album, I start to become flippant about it. But the opening tracks and the final track 'I Ain't Sayin' are very good.

They must be good because I don't particularly care for loud or noisy music and I really dig this album.

Very bold statement, indeed.

I love this album. When this came out I couldn't believe how good it was. It still is to me. I wonder what happened to her...

I'm not liking this album as much as I remember. 'License To Confuse, 'Magnet's Coil', 'Skull', 'Rebound'... are all as good as I remember. But the whole thing doesn't seem as great straight through. Then again this isn't their best album, right? This is the only one I own but I think I've read better things about some of their other ones. Oh well, it was about $6 used.

This is another of my all time faves. I was early into college when this came out.. ahhh the memories.

Yeah, I really don't like the Pumpkins anymore. The singles are the only ones on this that are doing it for me and even 'Bullet with Butterfly Wings' and 'Zero' don't have the punch they once did.

So, out of these twenty-eight songs, I think I like 'Tonight, Tonight', 'Muzzle', 'Thirty-Three', and '1979'. That's about it.

I don't know what happened. I used to like them. But now his voice is so, so grating. And the music is just noisy and annoying.

Adore was always my favorite. I guess we'll see if that can save part of this band for me.

i love thirty three.

Previously in this thread:
I discovered that I don't particularly like Gish or Siamese Dream anymore.

Currently:
I don't like Pisces Iscariot anymore either. Seriously. I don't know when it happened or why but I just don't care about the Pumpkins at all. These songs do nothing for me. Every one just seems to drag on and I don't care. I don't care about you! I can't stand Corgan's voice at all. The music is dull. Everything just makes me want to turn it off but I don't because of this experiment.

'Landslide' is the only track on here that I kind of enjoyed and it's a cover. Okay, I'm hitting off now. 'Girl Named Sandoz' is making my skin crawl.

You don't like "Obscured"? It's pretty clear I'm still a Pumpkins fan.

I dunno. I heard some of their songs on the radio over the summer, and they were okay, but I wasn't blown away. Then I saw them live in July and I thought they were pretty damn bad, so I don't get why everybody loves them so much.

"Girl Named Sandoz" was originally an Animals tune.

159. Soul Asylum - Candy From A Stranger (1998)

Image

I loved 'Runaway Train' when I was younger and finally decided to look into more of their material. And I enjoyed most of what I heard so I bought their best of album, Black Gold. It's a very good album and it'll be coming up later. That collection inspired me to go back and investigate their proper studio albums.

I picked up Candy From A Stranger used from the record store I worked at for about $4. After multiple listens, I discoverd something. There are three really good songs on this album: 'Creatures Of Habit', 'I Will Still Be Laughing', and 'Close'. Here's another interesting discovery: all three of those are available on Black Gold.

In short, if you like any Soul Asylum you've heard, pick up the best of. It's really good. But don't bother with any of the studio albums. They're all pretty bland. The only reason I still own this one is because the record store wouldn't buy it back.

160. The Smashing Pumpkins - Adore (1998)

Image

I remember when this came out and MuchMusic had the video premier of 'Ava Adore' and it was a huge deal.

Previously in this thread, I came to the realisation that I don't particularly care for Gish, Siamese Dream, Pisces Iscariot or Mellon Collie anymore. However, this was always my favorite album by them.

And (you got lucky, Bolly) I still enjoy it.

The first half, in particular the first five tracks, are excellent. I always loved the singles 'Ava Adore' and 'Perfect' and 'Daphne Descends' and 'To Sheila' are really good. This one's a bit too long for its own good, though. At 73 minutes, they could have cut some fat off the back end for sure and made a great album. As it is, even though I like this more than any of their others, I still find it a chore to sit through until the very end.

161. Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels On A Gravel Road (1998)

Image

Yet another artist I discovered through the CMJ board (Gee, I guess I owe you/those guys more than I realised.) and one of the first country cd's I ever purchased.

I fell in love with '2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten' and 'Right In Time' before purchasing it. And I now love the whole thing, though none of her other material has grabbed me as strongly yet.

She definitely led me to artists like the Be Good Tanyas and may have a hand in my delving into older country and falling for artist like George Jones and Hank Williams.

I need to pick up the recent deluxe edition that came out.

162. Belle And Sebastian - The Boy With The Arab Strap (1998)

Image

Belle And Sebastian continued to produce incredible music with this album. It's not as perfect as their last two and the EP's. 'Seymour Stein' and 'A Space Boy Dream' are okay, but not great. They'd be great by another band's standards but by their own they're just alright.

However, tracks like 'The Boy With The Arab Strap' and 'Sleep The Clock Around' are so undeniably amazing that they alone make this a five star disc. 'Dirty Dream Number Two' I can't listen to without picturing the video and it's one of my favorite music videos ever, and definitely my favorite B&S vid.

This is just one of the pieces of the puzzle that makes B&S one of my three favorite bands of all time.
