A player's stats are important but only a partial measure of their worth to a team. I don't have actual numbers to back it up but - A-Rod seems to put up big numbers in meaningless games and at -bats. I'm sure more opposing pitchers would rather see him at the plate in important situations than say Derek Jeter - a player with inferior stats but who always seem to put up numbers when they count.

MODERATORS: Is there any way we can ban Keiv from baseball threads?

As opposed to Statistics wonks who continually suck the soul out of sports? Isn't there some sort of fantasy league you should be focusing on or a comic book convention you should be attending?

Kiev:

I'd love to see your definition of meaningless games and at-bats?

While growing up in Washington state i got to see a-rod quite a bit and i seem to remember him coming up with big at-bats and defensive stops on a regular basis.

Well, what factors? That, and the playoff statistics I mentioned earlier, seemed to be the closest thing I could come up with to "clutch situations".

WHat exactly are you asking or trying to say here?

Are you asking if there are stats that will show his BA with runners in scoring position when multiple factors are included (like inning, lead, team standings)?

Here's a link to his clutch stats from 2006:

Well, those show that he didn't perform that well in 2006 then. But if you look at the same for 2005 (http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/bsplit.cgi?n1=rodrial01&year=2005) he performed really well. Did he forget this year? Does A-Rod suddenly become a worse player when the game is close? Does Jeter suddenly become better? We may never know...

Of course, Kiev won't believe this information anyway, because it is presented in number form, not in a highlight reel. Maybe I should google a highlight reel. It's certainly more entertaining than numbers.

Here's a better comparison.

Look at the clutch stats - it looks like his lowest BA is in 1 run and tie games? Best numbers look like in 4 run and above games. This is more time than I ever thought I would discuss A-Rod - and I'm a Yankee fan. I'd rather discuss Jeter.

Yep, in 2006 he clearly didn't perform well in close situations. But look at 2005 that I posted or the full career that DHR just linked to.

Here's Jeter's career: http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/bs ... 01&year=00

He's a little higher in the BA, but lower in the power. Basically similar. We're talking about two great players here.

His numbers spike dramatically when the games margin is greater than 4.

79 of his HR and he hit .345

Yeah, but his other numbers are still good. I bet most players have better numbers with wider margins, because their often facing worse pitchers and so on.

Or because god loves them more.

Oh wait, sorry, I mean SCIENCE!

not to mention that those hits and at-bats may have got them back into games they were losing previously.

Basically....people are just too critical of A-rod because of his contract.

And that incident when he knocked the ball out of Arroyo's glove. Heehee.

Tony Gwynn told me that A-Rod is totally not clutch.

I know you were joking, but my point was that Gwynn isn't an egotistical dick so his comment had more validity to me. Of course no one knows what really would have happened.

That certainly didn't help.

I'm not sure why i've taken the job of defending the guy who abandoned my team.

I know what you meant. I was just kidding.

And I also thought Kiev made the Gwynn comment.
