This isn't acceptable? Is this a subjective preference or is there some objective rule or even a heuristic that prohibits its appearance?

Its a personal preference thing mainly though I think the general consensus is that button down collars are a little dated.

I said "dated" not "indicative of being a kiddie toucher"

Certain button down collar don't look too bad, but dear god, please burn any oxford button downs that you may own.

So, what would be an acceptable button down?

I mean, I think I have a pretty good idea of which ones look good and which ones don't, but I don't really know what they're called. I don't know what makes an oxford different from other styles.

These are oxfords. Some men in my office wear them and they look awful. Not to mention, by 5:00 PM, they look like they've slept in the shirt.

The only exception would be to wear a nice plain solid white shirt (not oxford) with a button down collar. I don't think those look so bad.

Huh?

Seems to me that's about as timeless as shirts get.

You can't wear sweaters and shit everyday. What the hell do you people wear to work or under sport coats?

Gotta pipe in on the button down debate.

I think that with a certain look and style, button down works. Hegel looks good in his. But as a general rule, avoid them.
