I know he's in the bluegrass hall of fame and what little else i can gather from AMG. But tell me more. Howe Gelb is opening for him soon and it seems like this would be a good show.

Do you know "Little Maggie"? I think I may have some Ralph Stanley and/or Stanley Brothers around here somewhere. Not a full album, but some tracks.

Okay, all I have is "Little Maggie" and "Man of Constant Sorrow". I swear I used to have more.

thanks but don't worry about it...I'm too lazy to bother downloading anything and listening. I was just looking for opinions. And no, I know nothing by him.

I like "Little Maggie", and I'm sure he and Doc Watson share quite a few traditional songs like "Darlin' Cory". He has a higher, more nasally voice than Watson, and while Watson is more laid back, Stanley's delivery is more forceful and deliberate. Sort of like trying to yell through a megaphone, but the opening is the top of a 2-liter soda bottle. It's got this sort of Doppler Effect quality to it.

I like Stanley from what I've heard, though I don't own anything outside of those two mp3s I acquired somewhere along the way. I should probably fix that.

If you have any interest at all in classic High Lonesome bluegrass, he invented it, as much as anyone else. I love him.

I know I've got some period vinyl of his somewhere, but damned if I know where. Of more recent things, I have only:

Ralph Stanley~ S/T- 2002 on DMZ/Columbia- produced by T Bone Burnett, Bob Neuwirth, and Larry Ehrlich, and Norman Blake plays guitar, so how bad could that be? Not even a little. A fine record. And the cover picture of Stanley looks like an Old Testament prophet.

Ralph Stanley & Friends~ Clinch Mountain Sweethearts- 2001- Stanley doing duets with the likes of Lucinda, Iris DeMent, Gillian Welch, Dolly Parton, Maria Muldaur, etc. It works very well.
