I was thinking about bands that seem to release the same album over and over. What are some bands that have multiple releases where you really like them, but feel you only need to listen to the better disc because the other stuff is either the same, or not good enough?

Shins - Oh Inverted World
Crystal Method - Vegas
Nada Surf - let Go
Weakerthans - Reconstruction Site
The Music - s/t
Moby - Play
Clinic - Walking With Thee
Guided By Voices - Human Amusements
Spoon - Kill The Moonlight

Do you find yourself still buying albums by bands who released discs that are your ultimate favorite, knowing that you will be let down because the new purchase is not as good? Have you ever been surprised?

Modest Mouse is one of those bands where I love 3 of their albums.

I agree. You could stop at Internal Wrangler and be a happy man.

Yep. And there are at least two Spoon albums and an EP better than Kill The Moonlight. And I listen to Chutes Too Narrow about as much as I listen to Oh, Inverted World. And most of GBV's pre-TVT records are great. And...

Disagree with these two.

No, especially in the case of GBV. There's dozens of great songs, not to mention hundreds of just plain good songs, in Pollard's catalog.

I also disagree with GBV, but to offer something other than disagreement, I would say The Cars. I think their first 3 albums are great, but I think someone could get by with just the first one.

in a general sense, i more than likelywould make a mix that compiles an artist's best work on one disc.

for example, i don't think i could pick my favorite/the best Letters To Cleo album, as all 3 discs have about 5 great songs on them with an equal amount of filler as well. if i chose only one disc i'd be leaving out the good stuff from the other two. and rather than holding on to all 3 albums i could just make a single 15-track mix and be done with it.

Yeah, Fallow sounds nothing like Reconstruction Site.

I feel like every Strokes and White Stripes record sounds the same.

oh, inverted world is good, but it's not as consistent as chutes too narrow. i'll take the latter over the debut, though i want to give this new one a fair chance.

Eh, it's like playing cards with my sister's kids. Some folks will just never grasp it.

(But if you only need one Strokes album, you should make it Room on Fire)

Good one. I'd say the same of the Pretenders.

Personally, I disagree with the BKs being a one album type of band, just because I believe that they've changed their sound on each album. Rubber Factory, though, is the one if I had to choose.

Even though I love them to pieces, I think someone could get on with just owning "Jamboree" by Beat Happening. Also, you could probably get on with "Damaged" by Black Flag.

ida - ten small paces

it's such a great album. perfect for when you're in a mellow mood. nothing else that i've ever heard from them or their side projects has even remotely moved me the way tsp has.
