As a child of the 70's and 80's I remember seeing both of these videos and thinking how cool it was that they had these little movies for the songs.

I also liked the songs.
Had good tasted even as a pre-teen.

The Bangles - "Hero Takes a Fall"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7em6OTWCWk

Nick Lowe - "Ragin' Eyes"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYnQzS7VEP4
(This isn't the cheezy video I saw, but a live performance of the song. Sadly, the video isn't up there -- yet.)

Any of y'all remember what you saw first?

I couldn't possibly remember what the first video I ever saw was.

MTV didn't quite make it out to my small north Georgia town for a couple years so I'm sure it was something off of TBS's Night Tracks.

True.
I saw mine on HBO's "Video Jukebox" -- in between movies (probably Clash Of the Titans and Attack Force Z).

The first video I remember seeing was "The Safety Dance"

It makes sense that I would avoid MTV after that for years to come, despite my crush on Martha Quinn.

I'd guess it was something on a late night show in the early 70's, though I couldn't say specifically what 4-dollar video it would have been.

You're not talking about:
Dire Straits - "Money For Nothing"?

Me too, except we didn't have MTV (or MuchMusic at that point). It was definitely all Night Tracks. I couldn't recall the first one if my life depended on it.

It was the shit though. I'm sure the first one I saw was some standard early video fare like Culture Club or Duran Duran or some shit but for some reason I keep thinking it was the video for Kool and the Gang's "Cherish" where they're all just walking on the beach but I have no way to confirm that.

Todd are you sure these are the 1st ones you ever saw and you didnt' just find these on youtube and said to yourself, "I remember those videos"??

Admit it, the 1st video you ever saw was Steve Miller's "Abracadabra".

Positive.
I remember them from HBO's "Video Jukebox" (like I said earlier).
When I was in college, I defended The Bangles on the merits of "Hero Takes A Fall" (which I remembered from the video) all the time.

And it was about the same time that I saw that (admittedly awful) Nick Lowe video. But the song stuck with me.

I think it was around 1984 or so and we had only had cable for a year or two. No MTV on our system yet, either.

We'd just gotten cable when MTV launched, so I saw the whole "man lands on the moon" graphic and then Video Killed The Radio Star was the first video.

The very first actual "music video" I ever saw was "Cruisin'" by Mike Nesmith (yeah, the former Monkee) on HBO's "Video Jukebox," which they used to show between movies. It was probably like 1978 or 1979.

"LUCY AND RAMONA, AND THEIR BROTHER SUNSET SAM!!!"

The first music video that I ever remember seeing was It Smells like Teen Spirit by NIrvana. I remeber that I was like 5 or 6 and my family was on vaction somewhere and were staying in a hotel room and my dad was watching mtv. At the time I had no idea what nirvana was but I distincly remember thinking that the janitor in the video was cool. I didn't realize what video it was until years later when I was 13 and started listening to nirvana

I have no idea but I used to tape videos off MTV a lot. Mostly hip hop and metal ones.

Actually, that was like his mom or grandma or some relative of his who invented Liquid Paper, but that IS where he got most of his $$$, and not from TEH MONKEEZ, who lined the pockets of Don Kirshner and Boyce/Hart much more than their own.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_Clips

Quote:
Pop Clips was a music-video television program, the direct predecessor of MTV.

Former Monkee Mike Nesmith conceived the first music-video program as a promotional device for Time-Warner's record division. Production began in the spring of 1979 at SamFilm, a sound-stage built and operated in Sand City, California by Sam Harrison, a Monterey Pennisula College instructor with a motion picture background.

With an infinity cyclorama as the background, set-flats were composed of the styrofoam packing used to ship laser-disc players and 3/4" video decks. The first "VeeJay" (a term not then coined) was Howie Mandel, then known as a stand-up comedian. He was later in the cast of St. Elsewhere and is currently host of the game show Deal or No Deal. The director was William Dear, a commercial director who went on to achieve success for the film Harry and the Hendersons. Besides Sam Harrison, the production team was made up of Bruce "Buz" Clarke, Keith Cornell, Marybeth Harris, and Leslie Chacon.

The program was broadcast weekly on the youth-oriented cable television channel Nickelodeon during much of 1981. The channel's owners at the time, Warner Cable, wanted to buy the name and idea, but instead, according to Dear, "they just watered down the idea and came up with MTV."

Some videos shown on Pop Clips were:

* "I Only Wanna Be with You" — The Tourists
* "Moonlight and Muzak" — M
* "That's the Way the Money Goes" — M
* "More Love" — Kim Carnes
* "Lotta Love" Nicolette Larson
* "Video Killed The Radio Star" — Buggles
* "Walking On The Moon" — The Police

No fucking shit. I was actually about to put the barrel in my mouth when I realized that I had just brushed my teeth, and we all know that Colgate and gunmetal just don't mix.
